haha yeah im real fun at parties 😕 but no seriously glad its nothing and like I said its weird that mine doesnt do it all the time its how you open it. so it might never happen again. Probably won't happen to most but everyone reading this thread should just keep it in mind and me just sling open your hood

This has been my new best friend all week. Those little corner spots touched up perfect the first time.

But I've spent 3 days working on a hood chip

Regardless, a new car shouldn't scape paint off itself opening the hood, or driving, or whatever.

For sure. I've noticed there are a lot of inconsistencies in the build quality. For example my katanas left to right side have different gaps at the roof line one side is tight the other you can sticky your pinky in the gap

I've got an issue with the katana as well.

Driver side looks fine:

Passenger side, not so much:

so I did some troubleshooting on this today where I would raise the hood very slowly and depending on where I grabbed it and put tension you could hear the back of the hood slightly rub the rubber that is part of that plastic piece for the A pillar. when I heard this I could move my hand to the other side of center of the hood and that would slightly I guess change the angle and it would clear

so it seems for some of these cars the clearances are so tight its kind of hit or miss on it rubbing all depending on how you open it.
Are there any mechanical adjustments that can be made to make opening the hood a little more resistant to damage? It sounds like the approach is just to be careful opening the hood. It would be nice to be able to adjust something to make the area a lot less susceptible to rubbing. I’m just curious. ;)

I havent really looked at the hood hinges but im sure the dealer could adjust something. I actually sent this thread to one of my contacts at Nissan and he was going to forward it to the quality control team for the Z and so they can investigate.

there was something similar one Zs last year where early build dates had rubbing where the headlight meets the bumper that was removing paint and they came up with a fix and addressed the issue

Yeah, I've got the "headlight shocks" on my car.

@MCN1SMO are the issues you’re noticing much different to the GTR? I’m just wondering if this is a normal Nissan standard or they’ve rushed the car out?

not really fit and finish where things rubbed like this even though the cars are probably inspected assembled by the same people since its the same line.

but it had a couple little quality issues like this where the rear carbon diffuser would turn like a milky white and nissan replaced it clear coated carbon piece ( it was a $4K part) then there was a couple small things like paint would peel where the fender met the bumper and nissan put a little piece of clear plastic in that area ect. I think some of the first couple year cars had issues where the dash would peel up in hot weather.

FYI, Nissan is working on a warranty claim on my hood damaging the plastic panels behind it. The metal hood touches on both sides when opening. Might be worth keeping an eye out on yours as well.

A paint shop is quoting tomorrow and they plan to lower the plastic panels to allow clearance.

Car is a manual Proto, built 12th Dec 2022, Australian release.
OMG mate, sorry to hear about this - especially after such a long wait... :(

Keep us posted on Nissan (Australia's) response to this. It's pretty farked.

G'day Steve,
Yeah not ideal, but the dealership has been great about it. They have sent me to a paint repair shop nearby to see what they think, repair guy said the hood probably needs to be raised as mentioned by others here, before they fix the paint. He also mentioned that the damaged plastic A pillar panels and boot lid spoiler (yellow parts), are different colours to the rest of the metal body paint, and I tend to agree. The car was sitting in shade early morning and it was quite obvious. Not sure how I feel about that but he mentioned the front and back bumpers don't seem to have that issue where they meet the metal panels.

Still waiting from Nissan as to when the resolution will happen, as they also managed to trap dust or dirty under their Ceramic Coating and the tint!!! So that's all to be redone at the same time. 😳
The dirt caught under the Ceramic Coating is all on the lower outside part of the black hatch. They had about 6 people at Nissan debating if the black was paint or a decal as it has that raised edge, when the paint guy saw it he immediately said it's paint.

Oh well, kinda knew I'd be having this kinda fun with Nissan, as long as it's repaired and looking new, I'm still very much happy with the vehicle.

Cheers,
Steve
