When I first got my car I was impressed with traction control since it's easy to break the backend loose. It would hold it straight. But recently I've had a couple instances where I was pulling into traffic and it fishtailed. My question is, is it now not working? Or am I expecting too much? In both cases I was turning. Maybe it only works well when aimed straight?
I get the same thing with my perf mt. I've gotten used to just waiting until it is pointing straight before I give it just enough gas to get going. even driving down the road the back end will kick out on a corner with little effort

Maybe the tires are getting used up...

Same here. Interestingly, if I launch from dead stop it doesn't drift... So far...

not sure how cold it is in your area, these summer tires start to lose traction considerably when temps are below 50F. also try moving your seat back a bit to ease off pressure on the throttle. ;)

I highly suggest modifying your driving style if you don't want to end up in this thread:

As others have said, the computer is only programmed to help to a certain extent. Because it's not a rental car, the traction/stability control is very reluctant to do much about certain situations. If it did, everyone would be complaining it's too intrusive.

My newer Nissan Titan can also get sideways if I'm not patient to wait for the right time to apply power when unwinding from a turn.

I had a Q60 AWD and that would get sideways too if I would get too heavy on the go pedal. Gotta slow down because the Nissan FM platform is trying it's best to imitate a Mustang leaving a car show, kinda a Nissan trait. My friends Twin Turbo Cadillac CTS seems way more stable, but it's a newer platform. The Z is on a very old platform.

Traction control and stability management aren't magic. You can get any sporty rear wheel drive car sideways in a jiffy if your inputs are jerky and ill timed.

I agree with yellowz6mt. Tire temp is really important and the industry joke is performance cars come stock at no extra cost with 3 season tires. I sometimes check this out but only in a straight line. The tach goes up and the yellow warning flashes on dry winter road in 2nd.

I’ve had it happen. Same scenario- turn from a dead start w/ what seems like light throttle to me w/ warm ambient temps and tires. The LSD and traction control catch it pretty quick with steady steering and easing off the throttle just a tad. Short shifting to 2nd in manual mode (auto) right after I start rolling seems to help. Perfectly fine in a straight line or turns at speed.

I'm writing part of that to me getting used to the boost coming up w/ uneven weight distribution on the tires during the turn. Those turbos spin up fast. Iā€˜m inclined to put the rest on the tire selection.

My gut says Advans, Michelin PS4s or maybe even Continental Extreme Contact would probably mitigate that. At 7/32ā€, so it’ll be a while longer before I test that assumption.

its the tires. The stocks are trash during cold/ rainy weather. I was turning at such slow speed in rain but i still had to counter steer to straighten.

If you have the sport you have no LSD. So that can not help either.

It's actually exactly opposite of this, our LSD is clutch type so the preload can be enough in low traction situations like rain to encourage both wheels to spin at the same rate aka drift.

Also in general an LSD make the car want to oversteer more not less, hence why drifters weld their diff's and stock open diff cars suck at drifting.
