Correct. Even as short as it is, because it's a drive cable and not a solid shaft, it will bend. So the hole doesn't have to be perfect. If it's a little left, right, front or back, it will still work as advertised as long as it has the length to get through the panel.
BTW, going with a longer flexible extension (not sure if it's possible on the Z), the longer the cable and the more bend it has, it's possible to mute or lose the tactile feel of the clicks.

Well get it done! I like being able to see what others have done to get ideas for mine.

Looks like @VR30Infection put the cable cover on the underside of the mount to recess the knob. Less chance of knocking it loose and Looks clean. I was thinking not making the extensions permanent, just a cover to pop off when I need to adjust.
