Hello everybody, im new to the forum here. I had my 2024 Z performance for about a month and a half now, and its been great and i wanted to join here! However.... today. Im driving and get a check engine light. Car has 3k miles so im like what the heck. I go back home, scan it. P0096. I check both airboxes...take a look below what i found! A puddle of filter oil in there. I will never ever use a K&N product ever again. I cleaned it out, put the stock filters back in there, drive the car around and the CEL never came back. Im returning the filters, and i ordered the Z1 drop ins which should be here thursday. Unbelievable stuff.

I just went to check mine and the interior of the filter box was bone dry. What I did when I initially bought my K&N was I wiped the filter down with some rags for excess residue out the package.

Im glad you checked anyway! But yeah when i got mine, i did the same thing and wiped them and made sure there was no excess, however this still did happen about 3 weeks later

I have the Z1 filters in my Z but used AFE drop ins in my Q50. Oiled filters are tricky as residue can mess with the MAF sensors.

That's oil that came with the filter from K&N?

thanks for the pics.

i’ve used K&N since the 90’s without any problems like that. that was way too much oil. did the dealership refill the engine in the wrong place? lol

i’ve never seen new ones with that much oil. i think i would have noticed that on installation.

i never clean and reused, i always replace with new filters.

just checked mine at 5400 miles. air boxes are totally dry zero residue . I have had them in my GTRs for like 15 years and in the Z since 2023 never had an issue but as mentioned above. I never clean them just buy new ones when needed. Ive never seen them over oiled like that from the factory. crazy pics

You use k&n filters and don’t clean them? You just toss them?

I only put like a few thousand miles a year . They last at least 5-6 years. The only way to mess up a K&N is to over oil when cleaning. So yeah I just swap them out every 5 year or so.

This is correct. Wet filters cause more problems than not. I understand there are some positives to them but the cons and stories like these far outweigh the benefits to me.

It looks kinda Red, if so then yeah it’s K&N oil. Hard to believe one would come from the manufacturer with that much oil.

If you wash K&Ns, you only need a very light spray of the oil when they are completely dry. I guess I’m sticking with paper filters.

I've never had this happen with K&N filters but it is alarming. I use K&N filters on my marine diesel engine and change them at 3 month intervals. I have always been concerned with overoiling. I might try hitting them with some compressed air in the future to make sure there is no excess oil. Thanks for sharing OP.

Over and over, same stories, most people over-oil them, clogging sensors, etc. Plus for street use you don't need the maybe slight performance gain if at all for the risk. Stay with good flowing paper elements.
