Blackstone Labs report on oil change #2

I just changed my diff and transmission fluid and plan to send both off for analysis after doing my oil ~10k miles ago. Very interested to see what they say about the diff fluid seeing as it's gone over 300F on multiple track days since it was last changed

0w20 is for fuel efficiency. Someone living in a furnace should go a bit thicker.

"WHAT OIL FILTER DO I NEED FOR THIS HEAVIER OIL?"

Big can of worms here, with passion on all sides. (Less arguments will occur if I post if an airplane will take off if it is on a treadmill.)

You should select an oil filter with the correct relief valve setting. Since 5w30 it is a THICKER oil, you will get a higher pressure buildup in the filter. Higher pressure with a low relief valve setting, will cause the relief valve to lift, and oil BYPASSES the filter elements. Higher relief valve setting means oil is FORCED THROUGH the filter with a higher differential pressure across the filter elements.

This simply provides extra capacity and filtration.

for oil - i’m switching to 10-30 after break-in. 5 wt. oil is considered sewing machine oil in my neck of the woods.

But the relief valve pressure for that filter is 14-18 PSI. If oil pressure in to the filter is >18 PSI, it bypasses the filter element. Now, you also don't want a relief setting of 100PSI, as it will blow out your filter element.

The question is: Is a 15PSIG relief vale, that's good for 0w-20, good for thicker oil?

Not besmirching you, Racebox. You guys know your stuff. Every drop of oil does not need to go through the filter EVERY TIME.

Maybe I'm getting too anal retentive. Bottom line: I'm happy with my Blackstone numbers, will keep doing it, and getting a baseline.

Dealer performed my first oil change with 5W30 M1 and no mention of any filter relief valve changes, just factory filter. This is warmer CA climes. Since documented, I'll stick by this and maybe do the Blackstone on later changes.
