I think I mentioned before, this could be isolated to this particular dealer's ineptness and terrible service and communication (Mossy), and you should give another dealer a chance, not give up the Z. They attempted several times and none of the services were acceptable. You might have to drive a distance to find a more reputable business but that's worth it. Just your bad luck with this dealer.

I agree with @trackratZ that it COULD be something that's repairable but the person/people capable of doing that aren't the people that have messed with your car.
And I don't want you to give up your Z.

This is nice.
Very nice.
Like 'drooling on your shirt' nice.
But will cost you about 2 brand new Z Perf's (as pictured)

Good news! I have my Z back now. I'll review the paperwork in a bit, but the summary from the service advisor is, "Deformed fuel injector caused leak. They replaced it along with several one-time-use parts, and it's good to go."

When I picked it up, it was registering 16mpg. The car itself was experiencing lower than expected mpg anyway, and they probably ran the engine stationary a few times while fixing, and maybe spilled some fuel from the system, etc.) All of this was a side effect of the leak. When I dropped the car off at the shop a week ago, it was struggling to get over 19mpg.

So I went straight to the gas station and filled up, reset the trip odometer, and drove to work in mostly heavy street traffic. She got 22.3mpg on that drive. This leads me to think the fuel leak may have been an issue for longer than I knew because I don't think I've ever seen milage that high on the street. Now that all the fuel seems to be going where it's supposed to go, the mpg is higher than it's been in awhile.

Maybe she's fixed now.

I'll post some screenshots of the repair paperwork when I get a chance to go through it.

This was all covered under warranty, which expired while the car was in the shop. I may rethink my position on an extended warranty.

No, that’s a WELL-EQUIPPED M4 Competition ($108K). I went big with it to discourage you from punting your Z. The matte blue (Frozen Portimao) would add another $3K.

#savethemanuals

I'd be getting the "Z Sport" version of the M4, if I pull the trigger.

BTW, when I got the car back today, they'd turned off SRM (maybe the tech who did the test drives likes to heel-toe) Anyway, I didn't realize that SRM was off until I let the clutch out and the car lurched. I guess SRM has made me lazy.

Another update. After I got home, I went into the garage and sniffed the engine. All I smelled was "hot engine". No gas fumes at all.

@RobotAZ, you're the one who made me realize this. I know you parted with your Z, but the Nissan Kicks loaner I had was pretty quiet. Getting back into the Z, I regained that buzzing in the left ear from the seatbelt guide. Didn't realize how much I missed that...

Brings me back to the good ol' days.

I'm old enough to remember the 280ZX and Z31 300ZX having fuel delivery leaks too.

In fact, when my Z31 was more than 10 years old, Nissan contacted me and asked me to bring it in, they replaced the injectors because they could leak.
