I thought of that (stainless vs rust) but there is some validity to that argument.
First, there are stainless variants that rust, especially if they get hot. Not to mention that a lot of systems that advertise 304 may not really be 304.
Second, fabricators can skimp and use weld filler that rusts.
Third, I have no idea how common this is, but I've seen multiple stainless exhaust systems/components that have mild steel flanges, nickel plated to match the stainless tubing. I don't believe it's common to wrap the flanges, so this could be a moo point.
