Another update:

Car is disassembled waiting for parts. I'm driving a Nissan Kicks loaner. It's interesting to see the shared DNA in the digital instrument cluster.

@FSUZ33, it could be. The first repair fixed an upstream fuel line. This made the gasoline smell worse. Then that was repaired, but the smell didn't go away, but it was much more subtle. I'm hyper aware now, and this may be the occasional whiff I got when I was trying to remember if I'd ever smelled fuel.

Even though this has been a pain in the ass, I'm going to cut these guys some slack. They probably suspected one thing and tried a fix. That repair was bad, granted, but they corrected it. This leak is in the orange "O" ring, deeper into the engine. They might not have been so inclined to go that deep without trying the earlier fix. Who knows? Maybe both parts were leaking.

In any event, I hope they get it all back together, that it drives like it did before, and stops leaking.

During all this I've been researching other cars in case I bail on the Z. Some cars I researched back in 23 are off the market, some cars have shown up on the market, but I feel like the Z fills this nice niche: huge bang for the buck. I'd be hard pressed not to buy another one if this car just isn't the same afterwards.

Yes, sir. I hope they get it fixed for good this time. Plus, your Z is that beautiful blue. :)

My car has been in the shop for a week now. The dealership was nice enough to provide a Nissan Kicks service vehicle.

Being without the Z for a week has given me plenty of time to think about...

...replacing it with another car. This looks nice.

The M4 manual will be a worthy successor, you'll prob feel the more heft tossing that car around but definitely more luxury and way less NVH.

Yeah, you can certainly throw the Z into a corner. The M4 is 300 lbs heavier, and about 100 lbs heavier than my former G37. Still...

A friend has one of these....one of the most underrated cars on the road !!!!

The Audi RS3 is a high-performance compact featuring a 2.5L turbocharged 5-cylinder engine, producing 294kW (400hp) and 500Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and features quattro all-wheel drive with a torque vectoring rear differential for superior handling

No German cars for me. More expensive ownership cost than the Z. When I've had one it was like maintaining the B-2 bomber. And the M4 you linked is over twice the price of what I paid for my Z, but, granted, it's kind of apples and oranges.

Sorry for your woes with your Z but, quite honestly, it sounds like you may have gotten either a lemon of a Z or a lemon of service department. If that's what you want, though, go for it. Very nice cars, usually, but mine always seemed overly complex and I just wouldn't want to pay the maintenance and insurance costs.

I don't like all BMWs, but I do like the M4. Great combo of performance and luxury. They've got some deep blue colors that are awesome.
Personally I wouldn't go after one as I tend to drive cars for a while, and a BMW (in my opinion) is one that could get expensive really quickly once the warranty runs dry.

The warranty running dry is one of the factors making me think about other cars. My Z's warranty did just expire, and, if I'm honest, I'm worried about the Z becoming a money pit and a time sink. I bought the car to drive, but not back and forth to the shop every other week.

The G37 and G35 I owned before were super-reliable. I took them in for regular service and kept them for 11 and 9 years, respectively. I was hoping to keep the Z for as long. My particular Z does not seem to be in the same class of reliability, which I think is strange because why change the mechanicals from Nissan to Infiniti. Is the Q50 Red Sport a money pit?

Maybe this is a minor speed bump, they'll fix it, and she'll be good for the next seven years, but looking at all those parts spread out on the engine bay, and getting an e-mail about a MIL makes me wonder if she'll be the same when I get her back, or whether this is just the start of a trend. The mechanics are trained and this dealer is GT-R certified (I'll ask when they've last seen one), so we can hope.

Earliest estimate of getting the Z back is tomorrow...

I can understand exactly where you are. There are situations that could happen with my Z that would push me to part ways with it, pre or post warranty. A problematic fuel leak in the engine bay would be pretty high up there. Not a mechanic, but I feel that's a mechanical thing that could be fixed, so I'm not sure why your dealership is having trouble with it, other than a lack of knowledge/experience...idk.

This has been a total pain for you, and I see some others here have the same issue with the fuel rails. Have the techs there mentioned anything about this being investigated by Nissan, it's a fire hazard!

Hope all comes out fine with you, what are they installing, upgraded rails, connectors?

Keep this thread going...

I have several fiends with various Audi,s and they have been 100% trouble free and rock solid..... The Audi,s are some of the best built cars i have seen.
Build quality of an Audi puts Nissan to shame!!!

Im wondering the same if this might be a concern for Nissan. That they want to send their own tech to investigate it for liability reasons

Quick notes on current status.

Summary: current status is unknown.
  • Original estimate of repair completion was yesterday (had to wait for parts, then reassemble the intake system, etc.)
  • We played phone tag all day yesterday. Three calls from me to them without connecting to the service advisor. Two calls from the service advisor to me without connecting to me. Voice calls are so inefficient. Nobody's 100% available and phone calls require both parties to be available. If both parties are 50% available, the chance of a voice call connecting is 25% because: Math!
  • But I digress.
  • Didn't get the car back yesterday.
  • Called today. My service advisor is OOO.
  • I asked, is the car ready? I can come pick it up.
  • It should be ready today, they said. So I guess that means it wasn't ready yesterday?
Also: this.
