Regarding catch can....

It's ok to not use one during warranty period. Depending on how you use the car, you may not develop much build up during warranty. After warranty, check the valve deposits to see if a cleaning is warranted, then install the catch can.

I have one on my Titan, installed it shortly after acquiring the truck. I have actually had the dealership empty it for me during oil change, and to my surprise, they do empty it. The warranty on my Titan ends soon, so I took the truck in to have a very thorough once-over, including having cylinder 7 scoped. Truck checked out perfect and no one mentions the catch can.

However, this experience is only indicative of how my dealership operates, and if you are concerned or don't feel like arguing during warranty, going without a catch can won't cause any permanent damage to your Z.

More for a catch can thread, so I threw in a sentence about oil at the end to pass regulations.

For those that know more about the VR30 Q50/Q60 (not sure if either initially had a diff engine), are those not running AOS (see what I did there!) getting valves cleaned at some point? Is there any ballpark info about how many miles that typically is? And with AOS, how much more are they getting out of it? I also wonder if different oils or viscosities have a positive or negative effect on buildup...although I think if this was known they'd market the crap out of that angle.

I would run a Blackstone analysis to make sure what's really in the oil. This is good to do ($40 per analysis) for ongoing health check. Turbo engines get quite sensitive with oil viscosity, longevity.
How long does it usually take for Blackstone to get back with the results after you send in a sample?

Normally about 2-3 weeks.

Thanks! I thought I might try it. Kind of like doing a blood test on my Z, without my Z grimacing during the draw and slapping a bandage on afterwards. ;)

You say, "Nissan oil changes to preserve warranty. ".

Did the dealership do the first three changes, and you are doing this one?
Yes, and I dropped the pan to replace with a CZP pan, this is when I noticed this.

I'm just wondering if coolant got into the engine. I would hope that just opening up the exhaust to 2.5 would not cause this. Going with the Nismo exhaust would that be to much back pressure coming from 2.5 DP to 2.25? I'm just guessing at this point.

Maybe tuning after any change in exhaust flow is necessary. Again, I'm just speculating.
Not sure, but waiting on Blackstone to report back.

Gang,

Sorry for the slow reply, been absolutely slammed with work lately. Thank you for the replies!

A few days after posting this, I checked in with my Nissan dealership to get this documented and presented my findings, minus the catch can. A small oil sample was taken by the tech, but with there being roughly 12 miles on the new oil/pan combo, nothing remarkable noticed with the oil.

Interestingly enough the tech mentioned several Z VR30's and Red Sports they've seen can have similar break in material up to 8K, which sounds strange to me. I've sent the oil for analysis to BS, will update what I hear back.

Glitter is not break in material. You usually just see slightly elevated numbers from Blackstone NOT full on glitter in the oil.

Just a thought, I wonder if the turbos are out spooling the oil control solenoid on modded cars? I'm sure it takes a second or two once the solenoid closes for full oil pressure to build at lowish rpm(2.5-3k), could the turbos be hitting boost before this and punishing the bearings for half a second or so?

This is my first post but the picture looks worse than it is. This is exactly how my oil looked even after 2 oil changes and 3000 miles later, but got better with time and miles, there were brass and metal chunks at the bottom of my 1st oil change, Happens on all new engines, my new Kawasaki ZX10 looked the same way on the first few oil changes. I'll post my Black Stone report after I get it as well with the details. I wouldn't sweat it, it will subside by 8000mi as the automotive tech stated. It takes a while for new motors to fully break in, the piston rings will seat much quicker, everything else takes some time.
