This has been rumored for awhile. The part I don't quite understand is what benefit there is for Honda.

Car companies bet heavily on the Chinese market and surprise, surprise, that hasn't gone the way they anticipated. In the long term, if the Chinese products are allowed to enter foreign markets without tariffs, most of the current companies will either be out of business or struggling to survive.
Honda is much more of an engine company than a car company. I predict the plan is for Honda to provide engines for both Nissan and Mitsubishi, letting them cut back their product development costs.

IMO, it’ll be very interesting to see how the structure of this merger (if it happens) plays out. Will all three companies be held separately be the “holding company” they look to create or will they go an entirely different route. Establishing a holding company for all three instead of just having a plain buy out may give Honda a good way to pull out if things go south. Also, this won’t be a good thing of Mitsu or Nissan’s leadership have much of a say in matters. They’ve already shown they don’t know how to run a car company.

Nissan and Honda officially announce plans to merge
The union, including Mitsubishi, would create the world's third-largest automaker by sales.

Honda and Nissan have officially confirmed rumors that they're pursuing a merger, the companies wrote in a joint press release. Each would continue to operate under its own brand, but with a new joint holding company as parent. If Nissan-controlled Mitsubishi also came on board, the combined group would become the world's third largest automaker by sales volume and have a net worth of up to $50 billion.

"Today marks a pivotal moment as we begin discussions on business integration that has the potential to shape our future," said Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida.

Interesting, thanks for posting.

Mitsubishi seems like the kid who finally got invited to the cool kids table but only because Nissan and Honda's mom told them to play nice.

As an owner of the "last" Titan, I'm excited to hear that Honda has it's eyes on restarting Titan production. Nissan has already made a new Armada with a baby GTR engine, so it'd be a slam dunk to bring the Titan back.

With the Toyota Tundra munching it's engines, and Nissan making an excellent VR which has proven extremely reliable, and Honda possibly influencing the design language of a Gen 3 Titan, I'm so happy that Honda may bring back the Titan:

How does all of this affect Infiniti and Acura?
Are they just assumed to be lumped in with Nissan and Honda?

I assume financially yes, both affected. Hope for the best for Infiniti and should not negatively impact Acura's and Honda's developments.

Yep, saw the merger talks stalled! Nissan needs to get up and recover. Mitsubishi is also in trouble with car sales.
