My factory mirrors are still in place. The blue mirrors are attached on top of them.

When I first installed mine, the driver's side detached, so I added extra adhesive (3M double sided) tape to ensure the mirrors are secure.
Given the amount of tape I've added, I presume the defrost function will no longer work.
I also had this installed when I bought the car and just like your experience, I had to figure everything out on my own.
Avoid it and go with a third party, if you want a dashcam.
