Oil threads are clear sign forums have reached their peak usefulness
They start off being useful because it's a legitimate question, but they almost always turn into shit shows lol. Should just be a sticky on top of most forums. I know you Supra guys love a good oil meme lol

Stumbled across this the other day. Make of it what you will
That was really excellent. A very rational and illuminating discussion. He addresses almost all of the misconceptions that are commonly brought up in these oil threads as a rationale for ignoring the engine manufacturer's oil recommendations.

100% should be a sticky.

Soooo many people try to over think the engineers and the manufacturer warrenty. Soooo many people think they are somehow out driving the engine or car with a hidden spring of talent.

Unless it is at the track or drag strip 2-3 times a month. Just run what is recommended. Keeping the warrenty- run what is recommended in owner manual.

Are there any Australians that can confirm this is what their manual says? From Motive Video's Youtube channel should be from their Proto Spec owner's manual.

Based on the above chart, my tuners recommendations, and my hidden spring of talent which enables me to out drive my engine, I will be switching away from 0w20.
(I had to add to the show)

all kidding aside, the manufacturer is not suggesting an oil viscosity for a car that has downpipes and is pushing the turbos to the limits with a tune. If you’re tuning your car, ask your tuner what they suggest. If you don’t think you can trust your tuners advice, then my advice is to get a more seasoned tuner with a few seasons under their belt. As far as warranty is concerned, if you have a tune, and you break your motor, the oil is the least of your concern. Just my .02

Interesting concern. I have a 'regular car' that uses 5W30 (50k miles), a truck that uses 0W20 (130k miles) & a supercharged sports car that uses only a single, required, very specific 0W40; all synthetic. I don't 'dog' or track any of these. If you just drive only on the street, stick with the manufacturer's required oil. You have to lubricate Two hot turbo's. Nissan knows their engines. I never see pressure below 20-25, usually higher. Way down in Dixie! If your pressure really is 16 psi, contact Nissan's technical department. They'll address your concern.

They designed and built the engine, and are on the hook for warranty coverage for 5 years. I'd just trust em'...

Maintenance section of the owner's manual...:

"-Genuine “NISSAN Motor Oil 0W-20 SP” (or equivalent) is recommended.
-If the above motor oil (or engine oil) is not available, a synthetic 0W-20 SP GF-6A motor oil (or engine oil) may be used.
-Damage caused by the use of motor oil (or engine oil) other than as recommended is not covered under NISSAN’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty."
Wanted to add to this, by law at the federal level (I think), auto companies cannot void warranties for using 3rd party parts or non spec oil in this case. If damage is caused by using non-spec oil the company has to PROVE the damage was caused by the non-spec oil or part.

Also looking at that chart though I'm wondering if I should start using 5w-40 instead of 0w-20 since where I live it never goes below -10F and I also track the car.

I brought my Z in for a 1st oil change. have 1,600 miles.
I requested a performance synthetic with a 20/40 V. They tried to convince me the 0/20 IS best. I tried to point out that we Live in South Florida where the temperatures are very hot most year round and that the oil pressure on my guage shows about 16 at idle and highest is about 30. Also stated the 0/20 is ok in colder Northern states. The final convincing stated to me was thar " IT IS REQUIRED" to maintain my warranty on the engine.
Am I incorrect in my belief ? What would be a viable solution for a better oil that would bring my oil pressure to a higher and in my oppinion, safer pressure?
We recommend running full synthetic 5w-30 and changing fluids every ~5,000 miles or so. Switching from 0w-20 to 5w-30 was the first thing we did back when we picked up our Z.

Here's a video we did about a year ago as sort of a walk through and explanation of fluid changes we made, and why/how we did them.

Also, are you saying your car only sees 30psi oil pressure MAX? Even at WOT?

Why the swap to 5w-30?

I'd post that question on the internet and see if anyone would respond with an opinion...
