Are you sure it's a "clunk" and not a metal screech or pop?

Assuming it's not something as dumb as nuts and bolts not being torqued down properly, the most common cause of coilover noise is the springs rotating under compression and grinding against the perch/mounts. This is not a Z problem, it' s a universal coilover problem for any units without thrust washers or bearings.

also, the "Nismo" coilovers you got from the factory aren't Nismos.
They're rebranded KW's, the last we looked at it.
They should be using rubber mounts everywhere as they're comfort oriented for soft drivers.
100% a clunk.

As a, minor, update - I had my local mechanic look it over and there was nothing 'obvious' found. I'm taking it to Nissan on Saturday.

I still don't know which direction to go if they tell me the sound is 'normal.' I honestly can't believe that will happen as the noise is very noticeable and loud. But, trying to be prepared for that so I know which direction to go - springs, or different coilovers.

Thanks again...

has anyone pulled the coilovers off the car to actually look at them

is this “local mechanic” someone versed in aftermarket suspension specifically coilovers?

i would go to a true suspension shop that works on this stuff and not a general mechanic

Likely not, but I wanted him to have a look as I know him well. It's at a Nissan dealer, now, and they will start looking at it tomorrow...

I am still trying to get an idea of what to do, so I can be prepared, should this not sort well. Go with another set of coilovers? I see some suggestions, but was hoping for many in the same bucket. Maybe that's a dream? Or, add springs (which ones) to the stock NISMO dampers. Thanks again...

So I have added the two piece rotors (Z1) on those but really not effecting anything else. As far as the DR 57 wheels they are F+25 and R+12. As far as clearance they fit fine. Sure the caliper is close but absolutely no problem at all. Now that I'm adding the Nismos I have kind of taken it a step further and went +12 all the way around. Spoke to an owner w/ the same +12 all the way around and they fit like a glove. Wish I could tell you the size of the Michelin PS4 . I'll need to look it up to see what I ended up with..

Correction
F +25
R+12
How do you like those rotors? Which pads? I'm planning on picking up the set for my car to drop some rotational weight.

That's exactly why I did it. The rotational weight savings.. Is it noticeable? Yes it is. Overall I am glad I did it. Only you can say if you get your ROI. Actually considered maybe spending more and opting for the Track Package. As featured on Z1. But if I remember correctly that would have nullified the weight savings that caused me to do it to begin with. But getting back to the question I have no complaints. I also added the Master Cylinder Brace, Stainless Steel lines & Motul 5.1. In the end marginal gains do add up.

Interesting question on the pads though. Still evaluating those. Just now came back from a spirited canyon drive. I do a lot of that here in Florida :) I'm running and evaluating the EBC Redstuff. No problems bedding those in. No raucous noises, no squealing, no problems at all. So far I have about 3-4K on the pads. But despite the "horrors" of brake dust I am thinking of "stepping up" to the Yellowstuff. Noticed Z1 also has "Nismo" pads. I am wondering if you might have some insights in to those? A bit more money I think. Just not sure I would be getting much better stopping power with those compared to the Redstuff or the Yellowstuff.? I have some questions submitted to Z1 right now on that very subject. Hoping to hear back from them or talking to them about that tomorrow. The Redstuff are not bad but being kind of picky I would like better.

I picked up Nismo struts and going with Swift springs on my Sport MT. I learned that I like to set it and forget it.
I am the same - set it and forget it. I already have the NISMO struts - it's what came on the car. :) What made you settle on the Swift springs? What's the drop? Cost? Any issues with alignment, noises or rubbing? Thanks.
