Should Nissan make a 300hp base model Z?

I mean people were complaining that $40k-$50k was high and that's before the markups, so maybe a cheaper base model wouldn't be such a bad idea.

You're right, but I think you're looking at it from the wrong angle. Seems to me that people were angry that the 2023 Z *as it is* was overpriced. So, a 400hp model at $40K was considered by many to be too high a starting point (and secondarily that the gap between the only choices was too large) given what that Sport trim offered. Lowering the power output doesn't resolve that, it creates new issues. Releasing a Z less powerful than the outgoing model that will - almost certainly - cost more than the 2020 370Z would be met with quite a bit of criticism, I should think. Seems it would only make the trim strategy even more chaotic.

I just don't see how this would resolve the pricing concerns people had with the 2023 Z trims without inviting many other issues and likely a low take-rate.

300hp is 30 less than the Z and a joke. Fuk power under the curve how the hell are they going to sell a 300hp model that is heavier and more expensive than the 370? Not to mention slower.
Not defending a 300hp VR Z, but the Q50 did actually go from the same VQ37 as the 370z, to a 300hp VR in the exact same car with absolutely no other changes, and the Q50 didn't become slower with the lower HP VR.

You're right 1/10 of a second faster. I stand corrected.

No.

Zs never go down in power in different trims, they only go up. Nobody is gonna spend as much as Nissan is asking for a watered down version of a car that doesn't even perform as it should at the higher price point.
Z32?

True, and it did gain a small amount of weight, so I think we could assume that a 300hp variant of the new Z would be roughly as quick as the equivalent-spec 370. Which would be mighty disappointing if you look at the fan reaction to the instrumented test numbers the 400hp version is putting down *cough, substandard tires, cough* 😄

When the 350Z came out it had less power than the 300ZX TT.

IF Nissan had a good 300 HP 4-cylinder that would give significantly better fuel economy and save 150 lbs in overall weight, then it might be interesting to have a 300 HP version.

Let’s say they stick with the same model strategy as with the 400 HP version. Where would you price the 300 HP Sport and Performance versions to make it reasonable for Nissan and the consumer?

$35,000 Sport 300 HP
$40,000 Sport 400 HP
$42,000 Performance 300 HP
$50,000 Performance 400 HP

I’m not sure how Nissan prices the 300 HP version for it to make sense for both them and the buyer.

But I do see how a 4-cylinder version with better fuel economy, lighter weight, and lower cost could make sense from a buyers perspective.

$5-8k is only about $35-50 a month in payments. Doesn't make sense for a sports car and 4cyl vs 6cyl TT.
