Quick question about putting on the washer. Does it matter which way or which side you put the washer on? Because both sides are different.

Other questions:

When you put the new oil filter back on, do you only tighten with your hands or do I need to use a tool to really tighten the oil filter?

When I tighten the screw back on, how should I tighten it?

Thanks!

Crush washer: larger side towards the oil pan
Oil filter: hand tighten

I use a metal oil filter cap wrench. I hate working under the car so the easier I can get it in and out of there the better.

The old filter is easy to remove with the filter wrench. On installation I spin the filter on until it makes contact, I put a black sharpie mark on the bottom side facing down once the filter gasket makes contact, then I turn it just over 3/4 of a turn. Filter instructions say turn it more than 3/4 of a turn after gasket contact, so I am just past the 3/4 mark, the black sharpie mark helps with that. You can do it by hand , but it is just easier for me with my tool and when working in a tight space.

What is the correct size for the oil filter cap wrench?

I have this old filter cap wrench that works on a number of imports I've had , so I didn't have to buy one. It is basically 64 mm in diameter, with 14 flutes. I have a link to the one I use below, but it is a local Canadian store that sells it. You can likely find one that works in a US auto parts store if needed. This one works really well though, I'm not a fan of plastic ones, and this one can be used with a 3/8ths ratchet or a box end wrench.

I have one of those Toyota filter housing tools in my toolbox, I'll have to give it a try.

I picked up the right size filter wrench cap from Advance Auto yesterday. It is 65 mm 14 flutes and it was only $8.

I have found that most factory installed filters are a bear to get off. I am not sure if it is that they are over tightened or that they do not lube the seals with oil before installed. but more than a few filters have been completely destroyed trying to get them off.

Hello everyone!

What oil brand do you recommend for the Z? Is this a good brand for 5W-40:

I not sure what is the stock oil for the Z when you take your Z to the dealership. Thanks!
I settled on Amsoil 5w30 signature series, and just installed it this week as the car is in winter storage now. I was considering their 5w20 but I like the extra viscosity of the 5w30 visc. , not too thick and not too thin. It has a very low Noack volatility burn off rate, probably the lowest in the industry. Lower burn off is probably better to reduce intake deposits IMO. The new Amsoil formulation is improved and has a nice additive package with higher levels of Moly in the new formula (320+ ppm).

I use the correct Nissan filter and Mobil 1 5W20 Full Synthetic.

I use a universal one for all my vehicles. A giant pair of channel locks that were owned by my Father since he was a young man. They are at least 70 years old. They have successfully removed all my oil filters for 20 years in every shape and form of vehicle. Good stuff.

Other questions:

When you put the new oil filter back on, do you only tighten with your hands or do I need to use a tool to really tighten the oil filter?

When I tighten the screw back on, how should I tighten it?

Thanks!
I changed my oil 5 times and still using the same crush washer - lol
i using a cap style oil filter wrench P/N 07AAA-PLCA100 (65mm w/ 14 flutes)
i hand tighten the oil filter and then give it another 1/4 turn with the oil wrench.

I go a bit past 3/4 turn which is what the filter instructions recommend. You can feel it is tight, I use a cap wrench to get it to the proper setting, I put a black mark on the filter with a sharpie as it contacts the base then I go just over 3/4 of a turn using the mark as a guide.

I change the crush washer when I feel like messing with it. Maybe one out of 3 times. I only tighten the filter until snug with my hand then a little extra umph with my hand. I've never had a leak from a drain bolt or filter.

I made the mistake of buying the NISMO magnetic oil drain bolt, it comes with washers that are meant to be re-useable , and they have an integrated rubber o-ring. Next oil change I am getting rid of it , I think it is a bad design personally. I like the stock crushable copper washers myself, I think they are a good design. I'm starting to question the NISMO parts , the NISMO radiator cap I bought is a lower pressure than the OEM ones , the idea is that aftermarket rad caps are supposed to be higher pressure, not lower. I'm not using it.
