Newbie to the forum and certainly not an expert, but being my first Z, I did a bit of research on mods. Also spent time time researching the viscosity thing. There are many "oil expert" videos out there that break it all down, but the short of it is, manufacturers are moving to 0W-20 for compliance more than anything, particularly with models sold in the US.

At 700 miles I changed to Mobil 1 5W-30, installed an aluminum oil pan and undershroud. No track or crazy driving, but I'm in the South and want to take care of my Z. The Z1 oil pan is deeper, 6.5qt capacity now. And the undershroud seems very well designed, with vents and an angle that seems like it will help "pull" air from the lower engine. Think it's the power steering oil cooler right above the vent. I have a '25 Versa I'm also putting 5W-30 in this weekend. Versas were spec'd at 5W-30 previously.

I get sticking with manufacturer recommendation for warranty, but I'd challenge that BS after learning about how much CAFE and EPA regulations impacted the move to thinner oils.

That's the engine oil cooler above the ducting.

Nice choice on the oil pan and under panel!

Your K&N oil filter has the incorrect bypass pressure rating.

You will want the OEM Nissan 15208-65F1B or 15208-65F1E.

You may find some old stock B's, but most dealers have made the switch over to the E's. From what I've seen, the A's are what's installed at the factory.

0W20 in a twin turbo car seems crazy to me with how much a turbo shears the oil. I hear 0W20 is very shear resistant but I still change at 3000-4000 to be safe. may make the switch to 5w30 now that my free changes are used up.

I think we have had this conversation, but it makes sense to post it here.

The bypass filter is for a PSI DIFFERENTIAL across the filter elements. In the K&N filter, it has a bypass setting of 15 PSI. That means, if the filter elements get clogged, and they block flow, and pressure across those elements reaches 15.11 PSI, the oil will flow through the bypass.

Car oil pumps are positive displacement. You can't block the flow of oil. It is going to go somewhere. The bypass prevents the filter elements from tearing and blowing out.

I believe Nissan made their filters have such a high bypass PSI so ALL VR30 oil gets forced through the filter elements, preventing debris from bypassing the elements, and clogging the solenoid.

I am currently using a non-Nissan filter and 5w30 with the solenoid disconnected. I change my oil every 4-5k, so I don't think I am clogging up my filter to cause a huge pressure differnetial.

Agree with @Mugzilla 100%
I do NOT want to start a debate, and my personal preference is to stick with a filter with a recommended higher bypass rating. But if you’re using spec oil and changing regularly (5k or less), unless you have something going wrong in your engine that’s contaminating the oil and clogging the filter, a lower bypass filter, say 15 psI for the sake of this situation, will probably not bypass much, or maybe not at all between changes. Especially on a low mileage VR30.

I do also wonder if it has something to do with the variable oil pressure pump/solenoid? GM is also very adamant with their bulletins stating those vehicles required a higher bypass pressure (22psi) vs. the previously used 14-15psi filters.

Or... It's just because of these ridiculously long oil change intervals manufacturers are recommending...

Just to add, that you can potentially get to the bypass differential during cold start even with a clean filter.
