You're going to get a lot of mixed options, but Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is about as good as it gets these days. Excellent in high-heat applications.

Oil choices is like pizza toppings. Its whatever you prefer.

I use Mobil1 5w30 for now while Im stock. After I get a tune, I plan to switch to 10w40 summer and 5w30 winter here in Seattle

Where did you get the info on the relief bypass spec for each oil filter? I've been sent an oil filter with part number 15208-9F60A but want to see if it's at least the same spec as the 15208-65F1E I ordered

afaik Nissan says the 9F60A supersedes the 65F1E. They don’t know what filter they want you to use on the RZ34. I prefer the Mahle to the recent ‘OEMs’ and then the taller GTR oil filter (more filter media) in that order. BTW- google says the 15208-9F60A is “approximately 1.0 bar, which converts to roughly 14.5 PSI”

BTW- The difference between a 96F0A and a 96F0E could be only the place of manufacture. That’s according to a Nissan Parts Dept Specialist. They change just the last letter if the specification stays the same, but they sourced it from (for instance) Mexico and not Japan. It’s still the ‘same part number’ to the parts dept. But although it gets used interchangeably, it’s not really the same… in my experience with car parts origin matters.

Want to know something that will blow your mind?

I have a buddy that is a pilot and owns his own plane. One day we’re talking about oil changes on our mini bikes and he says he never changes his filter because it’s pointless. I went …. Then he goes on to explain how much more important reliability is on a plane engine than a car or motorcycle. Which I agree with, and then he tells me that most plane engines have no oil filter at all. It’s not needed. . Then he tells me how most oil filter bypass is lower than the oil pressure anyway so there is always oil bypassing the filter.

Just food for thought.

My thoughts. The filter doesn’t really matter that much. Just change your oil *AND FILTER often and use good oil *AND A QUALITY FILTER

(This edit is just to clarify my opinion. After reviewing this post, I realized that it makes it sound like I’m saying to not change your oil filter. This is not the case in my opinion. I always change my oil filters every time I do an oil change. I argue with my friend about this all the time to the point that he gets frustrated )

Not knowing your buddy pilot's point of reference or specific type of aircraft engine, I have attached a few pics to perhaps help clear the air. First, keep in mind that aviation maintenance can not compare to that of the automobile industry. Second, in contrast to the statement that "most plane engines have no filter at all" feel free to study the attached pics and determine if your pilot friend can explain why one of the most prolific manufacturer of reciprocating combustion engines in the USA designs their engines with an oil filtration system which includes an oil filtration canister.

Again, not knowing your friend's aeronautical background/qualifications/certifications... base on the above subject statement alone, I recommend you politely refraining from actually flying with him/her at the controls!

Maintenance on aircraft engines is based on actual operational time...some components are changed/replaced regardless of condition at specific time intervals. Imagine how much operational time we accumulate when driving in areas where a 10 mile trip can take you as much as 1 hour in traffic! Along the operational life of an engine, some car engines accumulate more operational time-miles equivalency (you can develop a calculation formula that approximates your driving profile), than the actual miles recorded. As we drive and advance in accumulated odometer miles... would be prudent to check the operational clock/time recorder on the engine and determine if maintenance should be adjusted accordingly!

I asked around at Bobisthoilguy on this, the opinion was that the viscosity of oil is not a significant issue with either filter. I am running 0w30 and it will not have any effect, maybe if you ran a 50 or 60 weight in cold weather.

Nissan is now moving to use 5w30 in all of their dealerships as there is a shortage of 0w20 coming synthetic thanks to someone deciding to start a war in the Middle East. My dealer wants to use the same filter for all of their vehicles. I made them order me the proper oil filter for the Z on Friday, they had to by 30 filters in order to get me one, so yeah they don't want to carry extra stock that won't be used all the time.
