Hi forum,

This is my first post here, wanted to get some help after some unsuccessful searching.

The car is relatively new (2000 km) and my dashboard/instrument panel is not turning on after starting the car. First noticed it on the weekend, but it turned on after driving for ~500 meters. Started the car today, drove around the block for around 2km an it is still pitch black.

Something else I noticed that sometimes in the lower right corner the e-brake light is coming up when driving for a couple of seconds and then turning back off. Also the passenger airbag off indicator turning on and off sporadically. Not sure if this could be all related.

Do you think it might be a blown fuse or a short circuit somewhere? I have scheduled an appointment with the dealership this Friday, wanted to check if there is something simple I might be missing.

With as new as these cars are, you are likely the first (unfortunately) if not one of the first. You will likely get more info from the dealers diagnostics. Sucks to have to wait likely a week+, but maybe someone around here can chime in.

Guessing it’s a US spec Z and you’re driving in kilometers.

And to add to that, I can’t help.

Hopefully it’s a quick and permanent fix!
Please report back after your appt. Your issue and resolution will be great info.

My appointment is this Friday I will definitely report on that.

Something interesting I've noticed. It came back up today after driving up the entrance to my garage which is pretty steep. I was going in faster than usual and sort of bumped into the ramp with my front wheels. I feel like this could be an indicator of a bad ground somewhere.

Nevertheless, I will still go to the dealership to get the root cause and will let everyone know

I feel like if bumps or movements are turning it on and off that's a good sign that it could be a something simple like a loose connection or maybe a pinched wire. Still weird about the e-brake light. Assume you have, but have to ask, have you made sure the e-brake isn't pulled at all? Full set on mine is only about an 1.5" (40mm, for the metric guys 😉).

Not hard but smack the top of the cluster hood and see what happens.

Happy upcoming weekend yall! Got an update from the dealership.

After performing a number of tests and submitting a tech line case - it ended up being a faulty unit. They have ordered a new dashboard unit from Toronto which should arrive by next Friday (fingers crossed). They gave me a loaner car in the meantime. I took a screenshot of the mechanic's notes, attaching it below.

I've never dealt with anything like that before and this is my first brand new car. Is it fair to assume that this is covered by warranty? They also want to charge me about $200 for the mechanic inspection. Should I dispute this charge? What's the best practice here, has anyone dealt with something similar before?

I've bought Hondas a majority of my life. The sales process was easy, the finance guys were never scumbags, and other than 'tune ups', and 'fuel cleaning', they were always straight forward about the repairs suggested. When I purchased my Z i was absolutely shocked and disgusted at the shit they tried to pull on me in finance. I caught them when i was signing the finance papers. Tried taking me from 72 months to 84 without me knowing. I was ready to walk in an instant. I'm not surprised a Nissan dealer is trying to charge $200 for a warranty covered diagnosis. I absolutely see why this company is down in the dumps. Their dealers suck for the most part. I love my Z though..lol
