Dammit. I think I'm sitting on negative equity and am stuck in my Performance Z for a while.

Yeah, i’m stuck too on whether or not to trade my auto in for the manual. I’ve put a little over 10k miles on my auto and the memories created with it and improvements in my driving over the course of the year make it hard for me to just give it up (the auto trans is also no slouch). i love how the car feels now with higher mileage, just feels right for me. Might pickup a nismo manual by itself or buy it used at some point

Would like to crunch numbers and based on expected value of my current Z, loan payoff and price of the new one, but I’m forcing myself to hold off. Payoff amt is the only one that I could guess reasonably close. The other two, I have no idea, and I don’t want to get my hopes up now just to be squashed later. If it’s literally my current car with MT I’ll be willing to bite off a little more. If there are enhancements, packages or a new/special color, maybe an additional bit more. But regardless of the differences I don’t think that it will be worth, to me, to go too far back into the hole to trade.

I really want to get back into a manual. But it’s not worth $10k+ (?) to me to do that..as of today. If they’re priced too high and/or the dealer try their markup shenanigans again it’s a hard no anyway. If some sit for a while and I can work into one at a discount like my current one, maybe. We’ll see.

Agreed, a car when it holds so much sentimental value; especially to the point that no monetary means can confine it- to me- I can suck it up and settle the loss, or keep it. Either or, the Nismo and now that it comes manual; really taught me how fun a modern yet old chassis can feel; it feels old school but holds a charm like no other. Nismo is a Nismo after all.

I switched from a MT Performance to the NISMO. My advice is; which I will do as well, wait until it shows up and gets test driven. I cannot imagine how a MT Nismo will compare to the AT. Take this from a staunch MT enthusiast.

for sure, appreciate the advice. will definitely wait for some reviews and test drive it before figuring things out

I am sure you probably already mostly agree with what I am about to say, but I still think it is worth saying, and it is why I hope they make manuals forever.

The auto is for sure quicker, keeps the engine in the sweet spot better, has no lag between shifts, and allows the driver to be more focused on guiding the car with the steering, throttle, and brakes. I am sure driving the Nismo with all those benefits is a wonderful experience, and the car out performs the manual trans Performance trim in every test a car enthusiast would care about.

That said, the engagement from also being responsible for gear selection and the clutch (especially on track) makes it more like a dance, because there are more controls than there are appendages (that you can use to control the car :giggle:). For someone like me, this dance is the main attraction. The manual shifter, clutch, and all the techniques surrounding them have a culture/history/lore that is tied into the development of driving, and not having it there is like watching your favorite movie with the sound off, or in black and white.

Back when I had my ND miata,, a guy at work got a P90D Tesla with the crazy launch control. We had to go on a day trip for work and he let me drive it the whole time. It was incredible. Telepathic acceleration, precision handling (all the weight down low)... it just felt like the future. When I got back in the Miata it felt like getting into a horse carriage. As soon as I fired the engine up and went on my way, I felt it though.. the engagement. The requirement of my attention to make it all work. it makes the car feel like part of you.

All that is to say, a manual trans Nismo will be absolutely badass, and I will probably have to get one.

MT = Lights dim. Partner close. Dancing the Tango.

AT = Lights flashing. Standing up, looking around for your friend, Kel. Some chick twerking on you.

Both are ā€œdancing.ā€ Twerking is easier to learn than the tango…I assume(?). Unfortunately not many people care to learn the tango anymore.
