I've noticed this a couple of times: I operate the hatch opener, either from the center console or the button hidden in the rear logo, and the hatch pops up a bit, but doesn't fully unlock. Then I try to lift it, and even though it's not fully closed, it won't open. If I press the button again, then it will fully open.

Yes! This has been an issue for me since day 1. I have a Sport model. I always have to unlock the trunk twice to open it.

EVERY. F*&$ING TIME!!! I do notice when I twist the black springs in the hatch itself out a little bit, it helps for a few times, but goes right back. I have to either hit it twice or hit the button as I lift it up.

Yup! Happens a lot! Also sometimes driver side door doesn’t unlock, until I go to passenger side and unlock it. Then driver side unlocks. Also noticed yesterday that I had a split screen on the backup camera.

This problem actually dates back to the 370, at least. Mine has always intermittently done this since it was new.

this

and there's other threads on it.

you can either
a) ask Nissan to fix it
b) buy heavy duty hatch poppers from Z1 - link
c) insert some washers or coins for an easy 10 minute fix - how to
(I've done this on my 370Z, but my Z is ok so far)

@Mud thanks for the pointers.

I've also found that if I hold the unlock button a bit longer, it seems to give the hatch enough time top fully pop up.

Although after watching the coin video, I will try that this weekend. THanks!!

Does anybody know if Nissan considers this a warranty issue? And if they're able to fix it, will it just come back later?

If it's a one-time fix from Nissan, that seems like a good option (especially if the only cost is time), but if they're going to install another set of subpar springs, I may choose one of the other remedies.

I've noticed this a lot more in the colder months. Perhaps the pressure in the gas struts is lower so they don't help out as much. Also, if it's been raining, and the glass is covered with raindrops, it seems like the hatch is just that little bit heavier.

It's really annoying, especially if you're carrying something, which, if you're going for the hatch your probably "putting in" or "taking out", so maybe almost 50% that your carrying something.

Seeing as though most people have not had this issue on the Z yet, you may have sub par springs.
It would be worth finding out. But I can only imagine they would just replace them with other OEM parts. A replacement might be better than what you have, I don't think it could be worse.
