I spent over 6 hours on what should have been max 2-3 hours of effort removing factory exhaust and installing the AWE Track exhaust.

Of note: the welds on the X-Pipe look horrendous (you should see the inside), the fitment was not perfect and took several hours to ensure the pipes would not hit and rattle the subframe, and I ended up snapping off one of the Nissan play-doh bolts on the mid-exhaust hanger brackets. Oh, and my torque wrench decided to go bad and now one of the AWE slip-on clamp bolts just wants to keep spinning with no resistance. Loctite?JB Weld? Pray? I've emailed AWE about it.

At least it sounds nice
Glad to know I'm not alone in snapping that exhaust bolt! I fixed it the same way: drilled it out and used a bolt with a nut. Next, I just need to repair the snapped bolt for the rear chassis brace reinstallation. These Nissan bolts don't like to be torqued.

Nice! I broke a factory flange bolt on the 370Z exhaust, and now a hanger bracket bolt on the new Z. I guess it's always 1 haha. We're just too strong :muscle: I hope you chose a steel locking nut and not something like a nylon locking nut due to heat from the exhaust

I’m about to tackle my exhaust. Torque settings must not be that high. Are you guys over-torqueing them, or broken from removing them?

On my side over torqueing. I didnt even bother to check what the torque should be for the OE exhaust hanger bracket bolts. I believe they were like 28ft lbs on the 370z so probably not too far off from that. But it might've been 38. I dont know. I don't recall lol. YMMV

Used my cordless ratchet and its maximum is only around 35 ft-lbs, so I really didn't expect that to snap it.

Will check the torque specs but probably low torque setting since exhaust components and hangers expand a little when hot.

I know this is late but I took my Z to NexGen car show in Maryland last weekend. Had a great time.
Very nice.
Are your wheels the OEM color? They look more gunmetal, and I thought the Perf Rays were black. They look really good.

Maybe it’s my age. Maybe it’s that I have a fully functioning cerebral cortex. I’ll never understand the appeal of this. It makes me angry. I feel like the ONE GUY in the ‘70s that knew in his heart skinny leg bell bottoms were a horrible trend for guys. He needs to take that crap across the street and leave it, and that whole trend, where it belongs.

Yeah I agree. I was at the wrong event. All the cars were like this. I was the only Nissan. I was classed as OEM+. I mean not to be biased but I was the cleanest car at the whole event. I spent 5 hours detailing her. Washed, polished, sealed and waxed. Then I got to the show and wiped her down with some detail spray and tire shine. The whole 9. Anyways it was a great time. Lots of people came by and asked questions about the car. Everyone kept saying oh this is the 400Z. 😡. Nope just the Z.

These are the stock wheels. I hydro dipped them Brass Monkey. And a friend of mine over at @thezcapguy made the custom center caps for me. I like the dip because I can see what color wheels to buy before I buy them. Thank you for the comment. It was my time doing something like this and they didn’t turn out quite the way I was hoping. But I learned a lot and next time they will be even better.

@KnightRiderz ... I meant to say bronze not gunmetal. Back in the day I had a black Civic with Racing Hart CP-035s in Winning Gold, which is a light goldish color. I liked it, but now I'm really liking dark bronze wheels, especially on black cars. Problem is a lot of the dark bronze are too orange/brown(?) for me. Great choice on Brass Monkey!

That's shitty quality control! I visited the Stillen factory today to see how all is made and QC applied. Impressed with nice tight tolerances and smooth mandrels. Ordering one and will report back. Noise alone is not the only deciding factor. I will install this before the weekend. My Z will eventually be tracked after retiring the RB26DETT 240Z

Nice looking finished product but the shop needs to work on their 5S deployment - the place is a mess.

The torque spec for that hanger is only 10 ft/lbs!! No wonder it snapped. I don't know why they wouldn't make it more robust. That seems very cheap of them.
That's why I try to look for all the torques in the shop manual before I start any job. If there is no torque spec, I try to judge on how hard it was to loosen it, what position it was in before I touched it, and try to match it as closely as possible.

True, but they've been around since the 80's, lots of molds and jigs, etc. everywhere for just about all model Zs and other Nissan/Datsun related.

So you are buying the Stillen? If you need a hand, I am available to help. Back in the 350z days, a few members installed stuff at my place. I don't currently have the same place any more LOL!!

Thanks for that offer. Most likely yep but still researching others, mainly build quality, and only catbacks, street or competition types. Not touching the cats forward.
