I think the real reason they called it just Z, is because it is the last one, and because the car took bits from all the different Zs over time as a nod to its heritage….calling it a Z encompasses all Zs that have come before it.
You hit the nail on the head, exactly.

There was one recent pre-review video where, when looking at the engine, the fool said something like "it's got 400hp, which is where its name comes from". I don't remember which video it was though.

I commonly refer to my 71 240z and 90 300zx as “The Z”. As do my Car enthusiasts friends. We all understand the use of the Z term for Datsun/Nissan Sports Cars. I think it’s appropriate and was well thought out my Nissan to just call it what it is “the Z” Especially since it is a mixed design of the former models and most certainly the last of the Z line.
