Want a 400Z to modify, should I start with NISMO?

A "Nismo conversion" will never be cost efficient because the premium Nissan puts on the parts

However, you can spend equal or less money to do better, just without the Nismo logo.

For example the Nismo "recaros" are not real Recaros, they use the nismo back but a nissan bottom.

A real Recaro Sporter CS, depending on the finish, will be equal or less than the absurd dealer markup.

I believe Z34 Nismo recaros went for $5K new EACH, when a real Recaro could be had for half

Same with the brakes. Sure, this Nismo has bigger front brakes, and you can get bent at a dealership buying the parts to put on a Non-Nismo

but if you actually track your car , you could upgrade the sport akebonos with new pads, 2 pc rotors, better fluid and lines, and titanium shims for the $1500 cost of "nismo" brakes and probably come out ahead


the main "value" of the Nismo will be in its "rare spec", and maybe if you keep it in garage, you can play the car market game and sell it to someone else who values "rare spec" cars down the line

otherwise you're asking . . . how much of that Nismo am I actually keeping?

Nissan did it with the Heritage CF spoiler and a few other Heritage spec parts

i understand, but i was curious if they were doing the same for Nismos
for the Z34/Z33, i believe it was relatively easy to get. Z1 stocked them regularly

I believe Nissan is restricting parts for specialty Z”s including Heritage and Nismo”s.

I agree on the mustang, but man, what a platform. You can buy a five- or six-year-old mustang 6mt for peanuts slap a supercharger on it and run 10's.

Absolutely correct!!! And blow the transmission! Fords 6mt is Chinese junk. You can't just "slap on a supercharger". Lots of supporting mods needed and those 5 year old cars are still expensive. You can run 10s for about a weekend before the car is in the shop. Kevin Bonds is my hero.

Go with the sport just know it doesn’t have the LSD but if your not a drift king then it doesn’t matter. If you have the extra coin then find a great deal on performance which will be a bit more comfortable. The Nismo is a good car but not that much better than the sport or performance. My Nismo has the sport + which is factory can tune that changes the tip in on throttle but does nothing for handling. The Nismo is like the performance pkg on a mustang GT has parts that enhance nothing..
Sport mod like crazy
Performance enhance what’s already there.

These modern manual transmissions will lock you out 50% of time consider that if going for big power.

And not to drone on, but something hit me. Some context for those who don't understand why people like me get pissy about the "400Z" thing.

Z's have had numbers that set them apart from the beginning. So when they call the latest one a Z, how are people supposed to know which one you drive?
The Supra has always been Supra. So how can people tell which one you drive if you just say "Supra"?
Go on BMW Supra forums and start calling the current Supra a "255 Supra" and see how well that community takes to it.

The aftermarket uses A80, A90, etc., like S30, Z32, RZ34, etc., for the Z. The 400 thing is useless and just wrong.
When I hear or see "400Z" it's uncomfortable. Like when my grandma does her DMX impression during deacon's meeting.

While I respect your viewpoint, and I will be calling them an RZ34 from here on out, there's a hell of a lot more important things in life than nitpicking what people call a car.

Thank you! Very interesting viewpoint. Though LSD is how you make sure you don't get a one-wheel peel when you launch or get on it coming out of a corner. Gotta have it.

Same engine, same trans, and nothing special on the Performance and Nismo. Except for bragging rights that you spent $60k-$80k on a car that is slow from factory.

Using RZ34 is the best way to search for different parts too.
