Feels like Mercedes is selling kind of a gimped EV. The owner must fork over $1200 a year, to get full motor performance.

Sadly, I think that is going to be the way of the future with all electric cars. They will manufacture them all the same but offer the higher models as "subscriptions". This is how the ECU company Motec works. You buy their ECU and cant do anything with it. You have to buy packages. You want a base tune, its xxx$. You want to add logging to that, its another xxx$. Flex fuel and boost control, add in another xxx$. The ECU already contains everything needed to do those things but you pay for the unlock code for the individual items.
