Pedestrian hood pops up to keep whatever you hit from smashing in the windshield. I assume getting catapulted over the car is safer than hitting the windshield. Science.
I have heard that it's more for the hood to have more space to the top of the engine. This way if the pedestrian's head hits the hood, it has room to crush the hood with air behind it, instead of the persons head hitting the hard engine block.

For the install of the hood dampers does the car need to be propped up to get hand below fender?

Hmm…
Gotta admit, that does seem more plausible than my Wile E Coyote/Road Runner theory.

What is the difference between Pedestrian (what I have) and standard hood? I am assuming that pops the hood for pedestrians in certain types of accidents.

The pedestrian pop ups are within the chassis. From your picture you have the pedestrian hinges.

Not sure about non-US models, but all Z’s sold in the US have the pedestrian (pop up) hood systems.

It looks like you have a Performance trim as well. What determines if someone gets the Pedestrian ones or not?
@FSUZ33 his response is correct from all I have read, if you are in the US, you have these. This is because we have stupid people that will sue if you run them over (not intentionally of course).
When I was stationed in Germany, if the pedestrian crossed outside the crosswalk or against the light, it was the pedestrians fault. .... we need smarter laws or people, so that our cars aren't modified to fit stupid people.

I keep coming back to this video showing the pedestrian hood popper in action.
