Taking delivery of a new Sport Z tomorrow and considering installing a limited slip diff. Anyone done this and is it worth the 1500 to do it?

yes and yes, i'm on the nismo 1.5 way GT/LSD at 80% lock. If you care about the clunking and chattering it will make then don't do it, there are other diff's that aren't as aggressive.

Unless you plan to track your Z or push it extremely hard on some twisty roads a lot, in my opinion it’s not worth it. However, if I were you I would spend the money on other goodies like exhaust, wheels ect…. I have a sport and did just that. If I would’ve cared about having a limited slip, I would’ve bought the performance but I knew I would never drive it hard enough to notice the difference.

I went on nissanUSA.com and bought the LSD one from the Performance 6MT. Watch for coupons, and pick the cheapest dealer, and you can get it just under $2k delivered.

Yeah, you can buy the Z1 LSD. But by the time you buy the axle stubs, and pay a gear shop to install them, you'll be way over $2k. It is $2200 at the cheap dealerships right now. (Spoiler alert: the prices change on nissanusa parts depending on the dealership you have selected!)

Sell your open diff pumpkin to someone building a dedicated rear with a LSD.

Buy the Z1 diff cover, as the stock LSD 6MT does NOT come with a breather tube. You'd have to install it with the cover ON the diff, and could knock shavings in to the inside of it.

Find a friend with a lift AND a tranny jack.

Why did I do the LSD? The stock 6MT sport tires are as grippy as freeze-dried oil slick. I was tired of kicking her sideways. New tires would have solved a lot of problems.

@Mugzilla
Was it a direct bolt on?
One-for-one swap. No mods needed.

BUT, if you buy a NIB LSD from a 6MTY performance from Nissan, mine did NOT come with a breather tube. Hence, I installed the Z1 cover, and installed the breather BEFORE placing the cover on the LSD.

OK thanks for the info, I didn't get the performance model for one reason, high price! Also unavailability!

there’s no way you don’t feel the one wheel peel with an open diff unless you never accelerate past 5k rpm. What’s the point of doing other mods like catback exhaust if you can’t put power down to the ground.

Yes, that can be an issue with an open diff. However, it’s not something that bothers me. This car is more of a cruiser to me. Yes, it has great power but most of all I love the way it looks. I did a few exterior mods and an exhaust just to make it sound a little better. I’m not worried about putting power down. To me it’s just fine the way it is. I don’t drive this car that way. I do occasionally get on it, but I’m not worried about that stuff.

I will be honest and say that I do think it was a bad move on Nissan’s part not to put a limited slip in every Z. However, like I said above, if it was something that I had to have, I would’ve bought the performance model.

There wouldn’t be much difference between the sport and performance if they both had the LSD.

Still could’ve given the sport the limited slip. The performance has the upgraded seats and other interior bits. It all also has the upgraded suspension, brakes, wheels/tires etc.

that probably wouldn't have justified the price difference between the 2 trims Nissan wanted to reach.
