or does this motor sound like a sewing machine? I mean, completely underwhelming exhaust aside (6mt here), the engine just sounds like a combination of ticking, clicking, and whirring. When I pull up in a drive through it is especially noticeable, but even just next to other cars at a stop light I feel like it's hard to ignore. When I bought the car I intentionally drove and listened to a few Z's and it seems that at least it's normal, I've heard it in people's videos as well.

What's concerning me is I noticed at low speeds, particularly when starting and driving slowly in 1st and sometimes 2nd, I notice that the noise kind of changes in a very specific kind of way that is honestly very hard to describe, the best I can do is to explain it as it might sound like something gets like pressurized or some sort of vacuum is created, and holds like a frequency that kind of slightly muffles the sewing machine sound? I realize that's probably a weird explanation but hopefully I'm not the only one who has heard this. And more importantly, is THAT normal or is it possible I have a loose hose or something going on?

For the record, I'm stock, have been following break-in guidelines, drive the car easy and have kept it under 4k rpm, car hasn't even hit 1000 miles yet, was planning on an OC at 1200.

what your experiencing is totally normal, the VR in daily driving sounds like a sewing machine etc. my car has 700 miles and sounds the same if I am not in boost. When you are on the boost it’s a different story, which is what makes this car so fun.

What do you mean by boost?

Thanks, I've gotten into boost here and there, once the engine is warmed up and I'm on an on-ramp...still being careful to shift at or before 4k rpm, but it definitely gets a LOT more fun once those turbos start to do their thing! I'll hit 1000 miles on the way home from work today, I can't wait to really open this thing up and see what it's like.

Apart from the usual loud sewing machine noises l get a kind of muffled knock noticeable more when cold but still can just here it around 1000 - 1100 rpm when hot.

Today was probably the first time I went above 1/2 throttle and when I got it to 3/4 throttle starting at 3kRPM it put me in my seat and the sound was very nice. I don't know if that's part of the fake pumped in sound or how it actually sounds but I really liked it. I now realize I have been driving like a grandma this entire time haha

I floored my Sport AT up a ramp to 100+ mph first time I drove it, with 5-10 miles on it.

As my first consulting boss told me a long time ago, “Even with a business you can’t plan for 1,000 years when the Little Debbie truck could take you out tomorrow.”

These engines are DI (Direct Port) engines and all of them sound like sewing machines
Exactly right. Highly mechanical cacophony of sounds when not under much load. It's just how they sound, pretty much regardless of the specific manufacturer or the engine size.

Coming from a GR86, the noise this engine makes is an improvement, lol.
God I hope so lol. Those boxer engines they put in those and the BRZ are nice for a cheaper fun little coupe but the Z's twin turbo V6 is and should be on another level.

What has surprised me the most about the Z, and it's just my lack of owning a newer sports car with more refined suspension and quieter cabin... etc. is how 100 mph feels like nothing and so little effort to get to that speed.

No offense to anyone but I could care less what it sounds like at a stop light or parked. I just wanna drive it and it sounds great when you run it.
