That was my fear. And I'm not interested in running cable around the headliner, so maybe I'll see what options are out there and get a pro shop to install as you said. Thanks, NocturnalEmber, I appreciate your help. It's bad. If my car didn't come with it from the factory I wouldn't have bought it, that's for sure. Yes, it's better than having nothing at all, but the app is extremely clunky, you can only 'upgrade' the SD card to 16gb I believe, and its just overall a pain to use otherwise.
I have no idea if this will work since you have a sport, but the best bet I'd recommend is find a good high quality 4k front 2k rear view dash cam and a power adapter for the oem power connector and have a professional install one. The factory drive recorder is not something I would recommend anyone pay for if the car didn't come with it.
Look at the back of your rear view mirror, it should have an oem plug in the back to power the drive recorder, which you should be able to find an adapter harness for to use for an aftermarket dash cam. Circumvents having to run any extra wires for the most part. Would be the path of least resistance. But something tells me the performances have an eight pin maybe vs the sports six pin? I could be wrong on the specifics but I think there is a difference, but I don't know why. That was my fear. I'll take a look. My RVM just has the auto dim feature and I was thinking of replacing it with the performance one or the one with the garage door opener if there is a difference. That may widen the wiring options. Either way there should be an option to use that port to save time.
Yeah, it's not great.I agree with both of you who have the factory dash cam. I tried to use it for a month and just had nothing but issues. Wouldn’t connect to the app. Couldn’t keep it connected once it did. And just so much more. I took it out and tucked the wires up into the ceiling. Still on the hunt for a good dash cam. Avoid it at all costs.
I paid for it and fully regret it. Avoid it.

Just following up on this topic, it looks like there is an 8 pin plug back there. So that would bring power to a camera, correct?Look at the back of your rear view mirror, it should have an oem plug in the back to power the drive recorder, which you should be able to find an adapter harness for to use for an aftermarket dash cam. That looks great! I have a smaller one in an older car that doesn't have a screen so that would be an option as well. Thanks for posting.I've recently set this up. I used an inline plug adapter to draw power from the mirror. This way I don't have to run power from the 12v plug. I had to modify the mount and Dremel about a 1/4 inch off of one end since it restricted the adjustability of the rearview mirror.

No problem! As for the plug/adapter. I have a Performance trim, and it uses a 10-pin plug.Following up on this subject, it looks like there is an 8 pin

Yeah, you'd have to buy the adapter plug but that would be the way to go. I still do not know why the performance spec uses an extra two pins, though. A quick search showed a few but I don't know if they are compatible with the pinouts for the 8 pin Z.Just following up on this topic, it looks like there is an 8 pin plug back there.
