Cooler air is denser, denser air allows you to burn more fuel, and thus making more power. This is the same reason we have intercoolers, to cool down the charge air to near-ish ambient temp prior to entering the combustion chamber.

The inlets for the factory air boxes, and many of the aftermarket intakes, draw air from inside the bumper cavity rather than drawing from within the engine bay. Mishimoto is a great option with their convertible/hybrid approach, as is K&N with their boxes that seal up against the hood rather than being an entirely enclosed box (Nismo, AMS, Z1, as examples). AMS & B6A also offer completely exposed open air filters which will perform very well while on the dyno with the hood popped, but in real-world conditions will ingest hot air and stress the heat exchanger/intercoolers more than otherwise necessary decreasing their efficiency..
I have read the same which gave me pause before buying. My experience was the opposite. I gained performance w/ the open AMS (even w/ the sleeve inserted) vs the aftermarket boxed intakes, it's anecdotal but very real. This was in the Florida heat during summer. Noticed no difference in engine temps. Charge air temps may be different but not noticeable. Intercoolers would also help for sure. As they say your mileage may vary. Either way really can't go wrong. Boxed intake offers more choices and affordability.

Get some intercoolers on that beast!

I was going to say something like this in my response a few minutes ago, but I don't know for sure.
I assume up to a certain point that gains from shorty/warm air intakes exceed cold air simply due to slightly better flow. Then at some point you possibly flip the advantage to the cold air intake once you hit the power difference gained by the decrease in charge air temp and higher density air in the combustion chamber.

The logic is sound.. I do wonder though what the actual temperature differences are between the two and at what temperature does the "flip" occur. Heck even the name "cold air" I'm not too sure that is not just a misnomer or a marketing position. I might try this Google thing I have been hearing so much about. All the other kids seem to love it.

I am starting to learn that Z1 items have issues. Is that real, or...?

once the car gets moving there's very little difference with open vs. closed filter intakes in terms of IAT, plus all of this air gets pushed through the heat exchanger.

I have the mishi intakes, have run them closed and open and cannot feel any power difference when open, but can certainly hear the turbo and purge valve with the filters exposed. any negligible power difference is offset by having the sound.

Could be that Z1 is one of the largest retailers of Z products in the country. I'm not sure but I can tell you that if they were to go out of business tomorrow there would be a whole lot of unhappy Z owners. Picking on one person, place or thing is often times fashionable. I have spent a lot of money with them and I'm very happy with them. I have sent one item back which they stood behind 100%. Z1 is not all things to all people. Welcome to the world of retail.

I to did have a pause in buying the AMS 80MM, for the reason on sucking in hot air and the need for a tune, but seems like the provided sleeves keep the car trouble free untuned.

Getting the Z ready for a Level 1 Tune. Which means this past week I had to switch out from the AMS 80mm to Boxed CAI. Wow..what a difference in performance. The AMS 80mm (w/sleeves) blows away the Boxed CAI. Very noticeable. I'm beginning to wonder if I would be better off with the AMS 80mm with my Stillen Tru Control vs CAI and a Level 1 Tune? Hate the idea of the AMS 80mm "just sitting on the bench." I would need to go up one level and get a custom tune to use them. Which I don't really want to do.

What's a level 1 tune? An off-the-shelf map? Couldn't you just keep your AMS 80mm w/sleeves?

Or... Buy once cry once and go straight to the custom tune! Then you can sell the boxed intakes and the TruControl to offset some of the cost!

Im not ready for a tune, maybe next year or the year after with Sonic. The boosted6 intakes or the AMS 80mm are the direction I want to go. So in the meanwhile I was leaning towards the AMS with the sleeves. Just wanted some first hand real world experience on any issues running those stock until im ready.
