EV’s are coming wether we like it not. Would the votes change if an electric Z was faster?

BEV all accelerate the same, instant torque, no gears. So, we loose the drama of waiting for boost or coming up on cam. We loose the great sounds and feel of a proper, exciting engine.

However, if I'm to look at the bright side:

-we also lose crappy engines in otherwise great cars

- with BEV, manufacturers no longer need to have drivetrain compliance for emissions or economy (yikes, maybe someday the government will get involved in BEV efficiencies, you know those assholes will!) So, the old "can't get this great car to pass regulations" becomes a thing of the past.... until government bureaucracy gets involved....

-manufacturers only need to comply with crash test regulations

-basically, a manufacturer could theoretically expand on a more interesting range of vehicles.

Now the negatives:

-will manufacturers get mired in chasing autonomous to the point they only focus on SUV and trucks and don't have time for fun BEVs?

-the government will eventually get involved and start regulating aspects of BEV just like they do for ICE. A case could be made that modern BEV are way faster than needed, and it needs to be dialed back for "safety and efficiency".

I mean, it's fun to think of BEV being a direct replacement, however I expect BEV evolution to open the door to a bunch of stuff that isn't fun. Like monitoring your behavior, speed, automatic fines, speed limit fencing, pay per mile taxation, etc.

Really, what's the point of an electric Z? Especially if Nissan keeps certain "Z" elements?
FYI, with current tech, the Z recipe we know is too small for the batteries needed for blistering speed and competitive range. I suspect that'll be solved way off in the future, but until then, the Z as we know it either takes a hiatus or, or the name ends up, sacrilegiously, on a SUV, like that Mustang thing, to accommodate the batteries needed to be competitive.

It'll be a while before batteries get good enough, affordable enough to make their way into a cramped 2 seater at a competitive price.

You nailed a lot of good points, upside and downside. Upsides are low maintenance electric motors that could run 500,000 miles and have acceleration that peels back the epidermis, like the Model S Plaid. Of course, whether or not EVs are soulless is a subjective question. Also a somewhat irrelevant one, since they are, apparently, inevitable.

I test drove a Model 3 Long Range just to see what all the Tesla hoopla was about. It felt like an Alien magnetic spaceship that defied physics. It ripped forward, silently, and just kept pulling. That wasn't even the Model 3 Performance. I can't imagine what the Plaid feels like. Still, I'll take a Huracan with a screaming V10 that runs 10s over a Plaid that runs 9s, any day. (IF I could afford a Lambo)

As you say, downsides are that it's almost too good to last, with goobermint bean-counters and fun-hating nutless monkeys poisoning the system. It like Socialism- They first give you a taste of honey, then when you're all aboard, they punch a hole in the ship, and you realise you're on the Titanic. Next thing you know, all EVs are Priuses, except slower. Current Plaids may eventually be collector cars, and a relic of a bygon era when we all thought EVs would be fast.

The other nightmare you mention is the Big Brother in-car monitoring, that will affect one's insurance, taxes, etc. It will probably also have an alarm in the form of an Orwellian voice that says, "Mr. Takemorepills, you have sinned against the State. Please report immediately to your nearest disintegrator station." Admittedly, that would be hard to do in a car slower than a Prius, but I am confident many of us here could find a way. ?

I’ll keep burning dinosaurs till the day I die. Idc how much more efficient/fast/eco friendly electric is. It has no soul, it’s just an iphone with tires on it. Idc what fake engine noise you put in the speakers, it’s just not the same. Not to mention that if you want decent power, the car is going to end up weighing 4000+ lbs. The nio ep9 is an ev supercar made in China, the entire chassis is carbon fiber and it still weighs 3825 lbs.

Most likely no new development to the VR30DDTT unless they throw it into a truck.

"Nissan will end development of new internal combustion engines for all major markets except the U.S. as it focuses resources on electric vehicles.
Nissan will continue "limited" development of gas-powered engines for the U.S. market, mainly for trucks, according to the report."

Ha, came here to post that. Also worth noting,

"The timing of the report lends it credence. Nissan will deliver fiscal year 2021 third quarter financial results on Feb. 8 at at 2:30 am ET (which is 4:30 pm JST)."

If the Z becomes electric…then I hope that it still holds onto its Zness.
what I mean is, I hope it doesn’t look too futuristic, and I sure as heck hope the interior doesn’t look like a Tesla
I also hope they still build quality.
Teslas may be expensive, but build is cheap and nasty. They have a lot of problems for a car that is so expensive and popular

Since the R35 has been discontinued in Europe because of regulations do you guys think we'll see a Z hybrid anytime soon???

After spending a week with my wife's work car: Yaris Hybrid, I am impressed.

Ideally I would like Z hybrid with performance in mind , but with the added benefit of that extra efficiency. I suppose we are still years away from that kind of technology...

They are working on "manual/stick-shift" electric cars, but like the noise, it'll be simply faked. :(
