It is well known that the VR30 doesn't have the best cooling from the factory. I've also experienced some nerfing while I was at the track on a really hot day. I've been looking at overhauling the cooling system for my Z. I want to upgrade the heat exchanger, the coolant radiator, intercoolers, and the oil cooler. So far I found a nice 40mm thick heat exchanger and intercoolers from AMS (expensive I know) and a thicker than stock coolant radiator from Mishimoto. Haven't found a better than stock oil cooler yet. I come from the PC building world and I know for a fact that cooler components run more efficiently. I don't plan on tuning my car for a while. Will the ECU detect lower temps and adjust accordingly? Or will the upgrading cooling systems have little to no effect?

I love my JB4 tuner from BurgerTuning. It also adapts to changes made to your engine, and corresponding components. But there are others that will disagree lol

@Brock Doesn't the stock ECU also adapt to changes in air pressure and temp? For example I installed the Nismo CAI and didn't have to tune or make any adjustments, also didnt see any warnings but definitely felt an increase in power.

The reason I went the JB4 route was because it piggybacks the stock ECU. It has its own microprocessor, which in turns updates on the fly. You can also remove it with no lasting effects. I got a 100 hp power boost! Best thing I ever did. 😊

JB4 is horrible. Only way to fully dial things in is with a tune.

I'm not looking for massive HP boosts just want the stock engine to run cooler and more efficiently. Especially for those hot track days. If/when I come to the tuning phase I'm probably going to flash to a stage 1 tune. I agree with the anti-piggyback tune sentiment. It's like a a software overclock vs overclock in the BIOS on a PC.

Understand! I personally just wanted a Tuner that adapts to changes in engine configuration's on the fly. I’m currently using stage 3. I also like the fact that I can remove it without permanently altering the Z’s ecu. 😊

I didn't know the PB tuners come in stages. Tbh I don't know much about tuning. I thought tuning stages only involved ECU flashes. Unless you did both? The only thing I want to mod as far as the core engine itself and ECU is the throttle limit after I upgrade the cooling.

I installed the JB4 Tuner myself. Easy install. The tuner fits inside the driver side pocket where the master brake is. You just unplug 2 connectors from the engine, and attach them to the tuner harness. Then attach the harness’s from the tuner back on the engine. You then route the other harness from the tuner to the OBD port. I attached the 2 optional wires to the fuel sensors. Installed the app, and set the parameters I wanted. Took about an hour to do. 😊

I have it set Map 3. You need to use 93 octane though.

I haven't been and wouldn't use anything less than 93. Do these maps affect air:fuel alone or also shift points?

Post a log of you using MAP 3. I bet its terrible. JB4 isnt very well known for smooth maps. Custom MAP 6 is honestly the only way to go. And it doesnt adjust things on the fly. It just tricks the ECU to its set values and lets the car adjust it from there.

lol I’m able to keep up with most cars out there! Even Hell Cats. easy to install, and adds on an additional 100 hp. I don’t have to worry about taking it in to a shop to have the ecu flashed. I’m not taking my car to the track, so no need to worry about having perfect tunes! I just mentioned it for those non serious Z enthusiasts that just want a little fun without the hassle. 😊

Post a log of you doing a pull. I would put money on it that your car is not happy and potentially going to blow up (the turbos at least). And no, its not getting you another 100hp on just 93 octane. Even the graphs they post on their website show map 3 on E30 doing 60whp.
