For those of you that don't know this isn't just a "Corolla" family car. This is essentially the US version of the GR Yaris, which has gotten lots of high praise from just about every enthusiast car reviewer and media outlet. It's going to weigh around or under 3000LBs while making ~268HP and it comes with a manual. This car is going to be a great bargain; probably priced around or under $40k.

A LOT of people are going to want this car. Probably more so than the new Z.
All we are saying…maybe in the Us…won’t move em in Aus…nor a Yaris unless it’s to the blue hair brigade
Different markets will be into different things
You won’t see many hot hatch 130 N Lines around in Aus, even with all the extras…it’s seen as a grandma car

A Yaris!? Good God, that's even worse. The Yaris is a "Granny Car" for oldies to drive at 5mph to the supermarket and to church on Sundays, while taking two hours to manoeuvre into and out of the parking spot. ;)

Interesting. Just curious, how are the Golf R and Civic Type R viewed there?

The US didn't get the GR Yaris which probably makes the GR Corolla that much more desirable for some of us here since the GR Yaris has received such high praise. There's just something about being told no... like I've always wanted a Mk2 Focus RS even though I've never driven one, and part of that want stems from the fact that I was told that I can't have it ?

Our cars are about to be a BRZ or GR86 and a first gen twin turbo 335i Coupe, so as bad as I want the Z I know it makes more sense to get something like the GR Corolla first rather than have three 2-door sports cars. ~300 hp, AWD, manual, 5 doors make the GR Corolla appealing to me for a daily/travel car, but the price has to be right or I'll just skip it altogether and keep putting $ in the Nismo fund. Definitely still getting a Z either way, but might need something in the mean time that I'd actually want to keep.

It's No Z in the looks department but not terrible...
Yeah, I mean for what it is, a 5-door hatchback, it looks pretty good from the side. From the image below I was a little concerned about what that panel on the rear door would look like but I think it actually fits in pretty well. Still need to see the front...

Here's the side blown up a little:

No Rain Checks
Introducing the first-ever GR Corolla. Born from a passion of motorsports and infused with the DNA of Toyota Gazoo Racing, this exclusively manual-transmission, rally-built hot hatch is ready for what Mother Nature serves up. Track-tested and turbocharged with 300 hp and GR-FOUR All-Wheel-Drive (AWD), the rowdiest member of the GR family won’t need a rain check. GR Corolla is bursting onto the scene fall 2022.

Performance
GR Corolla sports a 1.6L turbocharged engine with 300 hp and 273 lb.-ft. of torque, paired with a 6-speed Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT). Showcasing its capabilities to put power to the ground, its GR-FOUR AWD system automatically distributes power from 50/50 up to 30/70 front and rear for ultimate traction come rain or shine. And by enhancing your drive with Normal, Sport and Track Modes, this hot hatch is more than ready to rally.

Design
Outfitted with an aggressive front grille, flared fenders to accommodate a wide track, rear diffuser and functional vents for enhancing aerodynamics and cooling—there’s no need for GR Corolla to fight for attention. Inside, a GR leather-trimmed steering wheel and unique gauge cluster elevates your excitement on any track. GR Corolla Launch Edition pours on the details even further with a forged carbon-fiber roof, vented hood, matte-black 18-in. wheels * and upgraded Ultrasuede® * and synthetic leather-trimmed seats.

Handling
For whatever road you take, GR Corolla’s circuit-tuned suspension and Michelin® Pilot® Sport 4S tires * won’t let harsh road conditions rain on your parade. GR Corolla Launch Edition features front and rear Torsen® * limited-slip differential for a better grip while upgraded performance brakes help you dig into corners. It’s time to find your new comfort zone.

No lie - I think they're going to sell the shit out of these.

I used to have a 2012 Mazdaspeed3 back in the day. This is SERIOUSLY tempting for a fun car. Probably would be pretty decent on fuel if you're not plugging the boost all the time too. I used to get 35MPG in my 3 when I grannied it.

You know the aftermarket is going to flog this thing. It probably isn't a stretch to say a couple thousand bucks would get you to 350-400hp. This would be a fun car I could fit kids and hockey gear in, and that's mighty tempting, especially since this shouldn't cost as much as a Z.

I do think it looks much better than a Civic Type R.

Golf = married middle aged man who still wants to have a bit of fun, however it’s kinda seen as the snobs (richies) cars …it’s not terrible, or granified like the Yaris and the Corolla…but it’s not really viewed as a true sport car, not from where I am anyway.

The Civic Type R on the other hand is an acceptable hot hatch if you must have a hatch, but it’s still not hugely popular

The twins are if anything too popular, they are what the youngans get as soon as they have the money, nice cars but for my mind too many of them around. Remembering in Aus you can get an 86 from around 32k new, but we are looking at 70-80k for the Z

Mx-5 (Miata) whilst affordable and fun isn’t everywhere, but still well regarded. I think they are more limited purely due to practicality

I will say that Aussies are car snobs, and to be honest I’m nit sure where everyone is finding the money…but lately there seems to be a ton of the next level up cars around…things like Porsche, Audi, BMW series 4.

But for sure the “in” thing at the moment seems to be the Teslas. They are popping up everywhere
