Many concepts out there to make future high performance more closer to reality, NISSAN’s Z and GTR will hopefully go this direction.

But most critical to extracting performance will be weight reduction which impacts all aspects like range, acceleration, braking, cornering, tire wear, emergency maneuvers, etc

Let’s start with this https://www.thedrive.com/tech/heres-how-engineers-are-achieving-lightness-in-the-heavyweight-ev-era

“During the car’s media preview event, I spoke with Darren Goddard, executive director for production development, who said, “Being weight-neutral at the car level is very important to us. We only add electric weight if we can offset it and the driving experience isn’t compromised.”

Any other new developments post them!

Honda's Sports Cars Are Going Electric: Here's What We Know

WHAT IT IS:
Honda plans to launch two electric sports cars in the medium term. The first is dubbed a "specialty model," and based on the teaser image Honda shared, it looks like it will have the proportions of a smaller, more affordable sports car. The return of the S2000 doesn't sound like a crazy idea, especially when everyone is resurrecting old model names. This will be the company's first electric sports car, but not its only one. The second model will serve as a halo, and based on its proportions, it looks like an Acura NSX with a wilder form. Honda hasn't said if both cars will carry the Honda brand name, but given the NSX falls under Acura for the North American market, it won't surprise us to see such a strategy continue.

WHY IT MATTERS: As everyone goes electric, Honda has been one of the most conservative automakers to make the change. This move puts Honda on the radar, as the Japanese company aims to sell more than 500,000 electric vehicles in North America by 2030. With the Acura NSX leaving production after the 2022 model year, this electric halo car could mark its return. And who won't be excited by an S2000-inspired electric car?

PLATFORM AND POWERTRAIN: It's too early to know the details, but these two cars will be based on Honda's own electric vehicle platform, dubbed e:Architecture. Yes, Honda is working with General Motors to launch two SUVs—the Prologue and an unnamed Acura crossover—but the two sports models will be developed completely by Honda. We estimate each car will have at least 300 miles of range and a scintillating driving experience.

ESTIMATED PRICE: The "specialty model" should start at less than $50,000, but the halo model will most likely cost more than $150,000.
EXPECTED ON-SALE DATE: 2026 for the small model and 2027 for the halo car.

PONTIAC, Mich. – At an event featuring headbanging ’80s music and $2 beers this week, Dodge unveiled a concept for its first electric muscle car that included an exhaust system and multi-speed transmission.

The features aren’t needed for an electric vehicle − but could be key for winning over die-hard fans of performance vehicles.

“Sound is a critical component,” Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis said. “And the shifting is critical … we went round and round for the longest time. It does not make the car faster … but it’s way more engaging and way more fun to drive.”

Here comes another mule:

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a40958381/bmw-m-quad-motor-prototype/

  • BMW M announced it is testing an all-electric high-performance prototype based on the i4.
  • The vehicle has a new all-wheel-drive setup with four electric motors.
  • Virtual testing and bench testing have already taken place, and this new testing will put the prototype through more realistic scenarios on the road.

Consumers might not even have to wait that long. Dozens of pure battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are set to debut by the end of 2024 if all goes according to plan.

“These more affordable models have the potential to sway a significant percentage of the car-buying public toward buying an EV with their efficiency, performance, and lower ownership costs,” says Gabe Shenhar, associate director of Consumer Reports’ Auto Test Center.

  • Toyota bZ3 revealed in patent images in China and will enter production in a joint venture with automaker BYD.
  • The sedan will be offered in a choice of two power levels and will use BYD's electric motors and batteries.
  • Last December, the Japanese automaker previewed a Camry-sized sedan, which was expected to be among the first EVs in this new lineup to reach production.

Other than the shifting/sound aspect of driving, I do see a lot of people going electric in terms of performance and other benefits.

Let's say 5 years from now there are a bunch of sleek/fast EV sports cars zipping all over, just as fast if not faster than the old ICE sports cars, handling just as good, and not needing the $5.60 USD premium fuel per gallon I just put in my car today. Plus less maintenance.

Just charge overnight at home and rocket around the next day. There will be an allure to that. I'm looking forward to the day we have reasonable priced kits to retrofit electric into some clapped out older vehicles, will be interesting times.

Oh yeah, EVs will be coming out of the woodworks, they’re easier to manuf as far as parts components (much less) but the huge issue is charging network consistency AND service turnarounds. We’re not even close to that yet.

Even when Tesla Superchargers are avail via CCS adapters to other makes, still clogs lines for charging, esp to Teslas.

https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-service-center-problem-solution/
https://electrek.co/2022/06/16/tesla-untrained-employees-work-on-cars-service-problematic/

“It is so much of a priority that Musk has canceled sales and delivery targets for the quarter and pulled employees from those teams to work on service. The result is that sales employees, entry-level workers or managers, who have no training in servicing cars, are finding themselves in service centers working on vehicles.

To be fair, they are focusing on easier tasks, like changing tires, but it is still an extreme solution that points to a more extreme problem with Tesla’s service.”

It's going to be an entirely different paradigm for people who rely on really cheap vehicles.....

Currently, someone could buy a "beater" for a few thousand or less.
Transmission may act funny when cold.
AC may be flaky.
Might consume oil.
May idle rough.

But, they usually just keep driving them (into the ground)

Compared to BEV when it's on its 4th owner 11 years later:
The BEV required constant internet access in it's "better" years for fixes or subscription-based functions

Some BEV (at least Tesla) become disabled or reduced when repairs are made by "unqualified" persons

Some BEV maintenance and troubleshooting is locked out by the OEM

When a battery fault message occurs, many BEV become seriously handicapped, much much shorter range, maybe no movement at all....

What happens when you need a new drive battery?
https://www.thedrive.com/news/dealership-quotes-30000-to-replace-battery-in-a-10000-chevrolet-volt

Couple of takeaways from the above article:
- the Volt had less than 71k miles

-yes, aftermarket batteries can be found, but when battery chemistries become obsolete, and/or the car can't be converted to more readily available modern chemistry, you're screwed.

-the aftermarket battery for that Volt was still $7k for only 18kW. Still too expensive for it's 5th owner, likely a poor person, to keep running.

The Bill passed earlier this year provides for 500,000 charging stations across the country. It will also provide for upgrades to transmission lines and power stations. Hopefully, these things will meet in 2024, but I'm not hopeful.

The most recent bill provides funds for electrical panel upgrade, but only for those incomes NMT 150% of the zip code's median income.
