So, I've edited my posts above. I tried to shove a resistor in the plug, and leave the solenoid in the block. Solenoid did fine. Resistor looks like the arc reactor out of Tony Stark's chest from Iron Man 2.

If anyone has been using a female plug to pretend to be a solenoid, please look at it. There is a LOT more current flowing (For a longer period of time) there than I anticipated.

Just use a core from a cheap ebay solenoid. See my post on page 1, zero issues running it. You'd need a high wattage resistor otherwise, like 25+ watts.

I ended up going with this one because they provide a plug/harness which i believe is the appropriate resistor so no light turns on for the car. I know the price is steep considering its just a resistor and plug. Will report back if there's a part # we can cross reference to make one more affordable

The solenoid had a resistance of 25 ohms out of the package.

How it started:

How it ended up after about 3 months:

I have NO IDEA how those 2 little wires to the solenoid can carry that much amperage to burn/heat up a fuse like that. I had it wrapped with plastic, and sealed with electrical tape and a zip tie, so it wasn't moisture. Resistance of that toasted little thing is now 433 OHMS.


Folks, do NOT be an idiot like me and stuff a resistor in the plug to keep the code from showing up. Get a real tune and have the solenoid error removed.

If you bought some aftermarket resistor. CHECK IT. I pull some shadetree mechanic shit, but this one could have really really hurt. I feel pretty stupid, and lucky that I checked it.

Honestly though, wouldn't the worst thing to happen with the resistor failing just be a CEL for the solenoid?

Yep. Had my tune after my Project build. No codes . I had mine unplugged.

Very true. The connector got a little hot. The contact points were not damaged (It plugged right back in to the solenoid.) BUT, there's about 0.35" of slack in the wiring there, so repairing it would be a PITA.

Why repair, you ask? Sold the Z to Carvana. Had to put it back to stock.
