Just chatted with him and he recommends 0w-20. I agree that the thin oil seems fishy and I did not ask him what is in his Nismo. That was a big oversight on my behalf.
He has to give you the factory answer on record for warranty reasons.

I know. I have had success for years using 5w30 synthetic in all of my cars. I change oil pretty regularly. Rotella T6 synthetic, mobil 1 and more recently Kirkland 5w30 full synthetic. Frequency has to be beneficial. I just do't know what 0 weight oil provides. More research.

i think the 0w-xx are more additives than actual oil. The main driver is emissions / fuel economy. it flows better at start-up and cold temps. The trade off is heat / stress. the 20wt. comes from polymer emulsifiers (aka saw dust) that thicken when heated. I saw 0w-8 and 0w-16 on the shelf. I think these 0wt. oils are having issues with evaporation & consumption.

I was using 5w-30 in everything - not too long ago most everything had 5w-30 on the oil cap. In the same 5w-30 era i bought a 2007 s2000 and it called for 10w-30. to simplify, i changed everything over to 10w-30.

If you haven't seen this page, I think there's some useful and important info here:
https://goracebox.com/blogs/guides/infiniti-q50-q60-and-nissan-z-vr30-maintenance-guide

Some of the bigger takeaways (imo) were letting the oil temp get to 170+ before going above 3k rpm, keeping a close eye on oil pressure, I may want to invest in more cooling mods as preventative maintenance, and maintenance should be done noticeably before what Nissan generally recommends...solid read though, definitely worth your time.

I messaged Racebox the other day to let them know I was concerned about a.) our garbage 91 ACN gas here in AZ, and b.) I'm concerned about 0w-20 when the temps out here hit 110+... and c.) I'm not familiar with how the ECUTek system works for tuning compared to, say a Cobb Accessport like I had on my STI in the past, and how it will impact warranty in particular...their response was as follows:
  1. 91 ACN isn’t the greatest pump gasoline, but we can tune the car for it to keep it safe.
  2. We suggest running 5W-30 oil of your choice and the GTR filter will work on stock motor.
  3. While it varies by dealer, most warranties focus on hardware modifications rather than ECU tunes. However, dealers must prove the tune caused the issue to void your warranty. To minimize risks, we provide a stock tune file for flashing before dealership visits. Discuss your tuning plans with your local service advisor for additional clarity.
Funny that. you mentioned the Rotella T6, I used to run that in my STI's...the Subaru community loves that stuff.
