While spending the weekend in Reno, I decided to drive to Nissan to see what was available. I left shortly with a 2024 Nissan Z Performance. The previous owner had added downpipes, green CATs, and a Ecutek tune. My excitement got the best of me because I soon remembered that I have recently moved to California and have to now pass a smog test to get registered. How bad have I got myself?

Both mods could could blow the test on their own. It‘s a stretch, but it’s possible the cats are CARB compliant. My gut says even if they are, the tune would blow the test. As a native Floridian I can’t offer much, if any, help on this (proven by this post), but there are plenty of members that can and will. Looking forward to the responses.

Good luck, and welcome to the club!

Get ahold of a good tuner and have him review and revise your tune. You need to be set up for 91 octane. At the same time he can set you up with a lower boost map that will pass the sniffer. Then all you have to worry about is if the shop you go to is going to look under the car. This is due to the fact that there are no CARB complaint downpipes. For CA you have to have the 4 stock cats on the car. But. If your tune is clean and the downpipes have cats, it should pass the sniffer. Hope this helps.

Went to a tuner and had a 91 tune put on and then found a smog shop without a lift. They weren't climbing under my low ass car so no visual check. Passed everything, I'm so happy
So I have to ask, you mentioned they added downpipes (the previous owner) Did they do full downpipes or just lowers?

I'm assuming since you passed the inspection there wasn't a CEL.

In addition to the wonderful prior comments it might also be worthwhile to register an LLC in Montana. No sales tax on vehicle registration, and no emissions tests. California and all their policies can't force an emissions check on a Montana registered car. Just an option in addition to all the others. I have had all my cars registered in Montana to my LLC and have had no problems - even in NJ - also notorious for smog/emissions/yearly inspections
