My problem is my multimeter probes are too big to find the always hot vs. the igniton on. I have a way around that now, with a three day weekend ... I know I can get it done. I bought these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082V1245P?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1
so I know I can get this to work. If I can open the harness and put the MM on it, then I can tell the hot/not hot and be done with.
There is a white connector on the harness that looks like it will open more, but I can't see well enough to open it.
Paper clips :)
I will need bail money ... I need to open a GoFundMe.

So, my original question ... how can I open the connector, without destroying it? I can see two small plastic 'pins' on each side of the connector, but it won't open far enough to use the probes to find the always hot/not hot. When I install the final part, I want it to be clean ... within the stock harness/connector.
Anal I am, and Earth I walk on, so I walk on a pile of s**t. :D

I had the same problem. I used the pins from the mirror tap to test fit and verify the power and ground wires. The red wire adaptors have a male pin on both ends.
Thinking paper clips to find the pinouts, the ground is obvious ... idk why Nissan used green on the other wires. I am breathing deeply, focusing and then digging in. Three wires, is easy ... leaning against the dash, contorded at 55+ ... not fun.
I still love this car and blowing away the GenZ peeps with their Mustangs ... and the older asshats with the Jaguars ...

I didn’t take mine apart and i would not go to that trouble to just to check the pin out.. It will be much simpler to just install the pins from the mirror tap (or paperclips) into the connector and then you can touch the meter probes to the pins to verify ign. power / gnd. If i remember correctly, there are four wires on the connector? the outside wires are power - one is battery and one is ign. The gnd is the middle -ish wire. start with pinning those two and verify with the meter.

Yes - just do the paperclips or the pins from the mirror tap. I feel you. - i had to break out the readers to see the connector.

i liked the mid 80’s 5.0 and Z28/IROC tuned port injection back in the day. But now days Detroit is cranking out boats / lead sleds compared to the imports.

Yep, paper clips it is. I only have three wires, the ground is obvious (black), so if I take the MM to one side, I will know the other is the hot/ign.
I appreciate the feedback to know I am on the right track ... always good to have a different perspective. @thesilverbullet

are you referring to using a mirror tap for both? not sure its a good idea to power both from the rv mirror. It depends on the amp draw. most radar detectors are < 1 amp. How many amps is the dash cam? If the cam is <1 amp, then that maybe reasonable. If it’s 2+ amps, i would wire from the fuse box.
I ended up tapping to the fuse box under the drivers side panel and using a tap a fuse. Pretty simple, just run the camera wires inside th headliner and down to the fuse box.

I‘m a product of the 80’s and not that old yet. But i do have a friend / retired coworker that is that age - he uses the term a lot and where i get it from. He was from the GTO (gas, tires & oil) era.

I only have 3 wires and even the cell phone cam can't see a difference between the two greens.
Small paper clips will work, took a lazy day since this is the 4th.

R3 and I am blind as hell up close. But I am anal when I install anything. The details matter. I only used velcro, not the wire ties. I am happy with the install, but I want to put a bracket on too.

I’m using a blendmount mount - love it because i can cover the detector with the sun shade to keep the sun off it.

If you want to keep it like you have it, i would do the ”permanent“ mount bracket. These little babies work good. Some folks will just replace the suction cups with 3m tape. But for <$10 the “permanent” mounts are worth the money. I had to use one for my wife’s suv because there’s no space to mount a blendmount to the rv mirror.
