Hello there,

I have an interesting question for this post. Full downpipes vs Lower donwpipes. Which should I get? What is worth more for the price and installation.

Im looking to open my car up now that I have installed intakes and heat exchanger. Seems to me the car sounds very boring after 4k rpm, and there are little to no turbo sound goodness. So does any one have experience fdp vs ldp? Is ldp enough for the exhaust and turbo noises/power gains? Lmk your guys experiences and feel free to share some clips.

Thanks,

With the right exhaust, a cat back is enough

For example
My US Tomei Type D
I get enough turbo for my liking

But for sure, with even and LDP you should get more turbo sounds.

Unfortunately CBE in these cars will almost always never have enough character or sound due to the bottleneck at the downpipes. Ive gotten 2 exhausts, the Z1 touring and now im rocking the AWE track exhaust. The Z especially above 4k rpm starts to sound like a vacuum cleaner under throttle due to the diameter change going from 1.75 inches to 3 inches. So CBE for me is most certainly not enough. Im just looking to see if a full donwpipe is worth the trouble instead of just the lowers.

As far as power output is concerned, the difference between doing lower down pipes or full downpipes is between 10-20 Hp.

Thats not as much as I thought. What about in terms of sound?
I haven’t heard them back to back. The info I gave above came from Seb @ Specialty Z from dyno tuning so many VR30’s

I can say this, I had a Q50 and added just lower DP’s and a tune and the sound increase was super obvious even through the factory exhaust.

Hope this is helpful.

I’m probably going to go with full downpipes with high flow cats.

I know that it’s easy to think it’s only 10-20 hp difference, but that’s how all of the upgrades are. The biggest increase is an Ecutek tune. Followed by a tune and lower dp’s, followed by full dp’s followed by cat back exhaust, etc. (this is with stock turbos). It all helps bit by bit to extract what you can. Intakes are high cost low yeld on these engines because they are already duel intakes. But it’s one of the first mods a lot of guys do. I would choose full downpipes pipes over intakes hands down. Bang for buck it’s one of the best. Maybe others here that have full dp’s can chime in on the sound difference but with full 3” dp’s I’m willing to bet they put out more volume than just lowers.

True but my concern isnt specifically the gains only but the cost to benefit. I dont want to have to deal with the CEL and catless smell from a full downpipe and the rough installation. Plus a full catted downpipe costs too much for me. I think I will just go with ldps considering the power gains arent enough to justify.

Be a big boy and get the full downpipes catless. But find a shop that will prevent the CEL on it. I hear some tuners don't do that, and some do

Jk, do whatever you like :) just please send sound video!

lower will increase sound for sure paired with catback would be good and no tune needed

full downpipes will need a tune especially catless

boost creep is possible

I think a tune is needed with lowers. Just because it doesn’t pop a cel doesn’t mean it’s not needed. I could be mistaken, however I believe once you go lower downpipes you’ve freed up more flow than the computers normal parameters can cover. So if you drive the car hard you could end up lowering engine life. Maybe. lol. I know I wouldn’t. On my Q50 after lowers and a tune I gained a significant amount of power AND increased mpg while cruising. Why chance it when you can have a better running and more powerful Z?!

🤣. I wish. I live in Kalifornia. I have to worry about the guys with badges and ticket books. I think I can get away with 3” DP with high flow cats. Plus the power difference isn’t much at that point.

Oh yeah, I think we already talked about Montana LLC registration but you've already paid Cali sales tax. Rip.

Yeah. Next year my friend. But will still add high flow cats. Just to keep them from having something to have a problem with.
