I have the 2025 Z Performance 6MT and at some point am looking for an exhaust and other changes that help me hear the engine/exhaust better inside the car, especially during calmer driving. I couldn't care much less how it sounds to other people outside; not that I'm against improving their lives just mentioning because the goal is purely about improving what I hear on the inside while driving. In fact I want to avoid the outside sounds being overly loud just for the sake of what someone behind me hears.

With a stock config, when you're getting on it you can hear things well enough to know when you're approaching the shift points you want. But when you even moderately drop the aggression level the engine sounds are quickly eclipsed by general road noise, and I find myself checking the tach more often than I like to know what's going on. To be fair, I had the ASE disabled because I want to hear the car itself.

For exhaust, I've been listening to several videos and like how the Stillen Street series sounds and based on the X pipe design I think also helps more with the inside sounds. Also considering a variable valve setup, more expensive and more to break, but maybe. The Borla Atak sounds good but how much of it is what's behind me hears vs what I hear? For those of you who have done cat back exhaust swaps, how do you like the inside sounds, especially if you have the 6MT?

For intakes, I don't want anything that pulls hot air from the engine bay. I would probably do something like the AMS intakes that pull from the front bumper, but I see mixed reviews on what improvements you can hear. It does look like the stock on the Performance trim has a lot of sound deadening and restrictive filters and if changing these helps enough I will probably do at some point.

For sound deadening I'm considering something better in the doors and floors, and maybe some kind of felt liners inside the wheel wells. Trying to minimize drilling where the benefit is negligible but I want to doing something about the well noise; even a small amount of typical city street debris sounds like throwing gravel against a garden shed a few feet from my head, so is distractingly loud.

I don't want to mess with the downpipes although I know that would probably help a lot, but for now I'm keeping things more OEM+. Any tips much appreciated!

One of the reasons I bought an exhaust is exactly what you mentioned -- it's too hard to hear the engine at low speed driving. I purchased the Nismo Street and it's fantastic. It's much easier to hear the engine and time shifts. It's a wonderful, mature sound, no drone at highway speeds, and I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.

As an aside -- If you have plans for bigger power modifications in the future, you probably want to go with something else that's a true 3" exhaust (Nismo is only around 2.25", IIRC). For my purposes, the Nismo was perfect.

I opted for the K&N intakes and AWE Touring exhaust, and would absolutely choose both again. I also liked my trunk area with sound deadening material.

Thanks, I'll check out the Nismo at the risk of being labeled Fismo lol. I doubt I'll mod to the point I'd need 3" so it would fit the bill for me also.

Do the K&N's keep you cool enough in TX? I have the same humid heat and was looking at those but was concerned how much hot engine bay air they pull in?

For the sound deadening did you just do your trunk and it helped a good bit with noise? I wasn't sure how much coming through there is tire/road vs the exhaust/engine I'm trying to boost.

I liked the AWE Touring also, I'll keep it on the short list, thx for the feedback

Regarding the K&N's, yes, they seal against the underside of the hood to utilize the factory front bumper ambient air ducts preventing heatsoak. I'm very happy with them.

Re: sound deadening - I did just the trunk area to improve the sound of the factory subwoofer, and it noticably helped.

+ 1 on the Nismo Street, no drone at any speed. I ran 88mph thru Utah and there wasn’t any problem. Im not trying to turn my Sport into a Nismo. With that said Nismo has some great stuff for upgrades and it’s factory engineered to work with the car.

That’s my .02 cents worth.

Indeed. The NISMO Street is what I was looking for, as far as sound and a little HP boost. I'm very pleased with it. I'm doing the NISMO heat exchanger and CAI next. Are they the "absolute" in performance, price, etc.? No, but they're good enough for me and my favorite local Nissan dealer can do it for me. It'll pretty much put my Z sport where I'll be more than happy. I absolutely love the Z.
