So my wife and I hopped into the Z today to go for a drive, plugged in my phone (Pixel 7) with this cable, and drove off. Android Auto started right up. Music was playing. The map was showing. I was ready for a nice drive.

Then Android Auto disconnected. Then it reconnected. Then it disconnected again. After a bit of this in rapid succession, it finally gave up.

I asked my wife (who has zero tolerance for tech that doesn't work, so you can imagine how that went) to try the other USB cable I have in the car (for charging her phone on a road trip). She tried it. No joy.

By now we're about five miles away, and I can pull off at an off ramp to safely stop and check it out.

We tried both our phones and both cables, and nothing worked. The phone didn't even show that it was charging. It seemed like the USB port in the dash had failed.

Anyway, switched to Bluetooth, and kept going.

When we got home (I'm at 1175 miles, almost out of break-in), after putting the groceries away, I went back into the garage to try out a USB C to USB C cable. It worked! Then I tried the original cable, and it worked too! WTF.

Anybody else having AA issues?

I suspect this problem is caused by a crappy cable. I'm going to try this cable instead.

I like the right angle cables because the phone end of the connector doesn't rest on the console, which I hope reduces stress on the phone.

Some generic one I found in my WRX. I agree about the right angle kind. I'll have to get one

Update on this. The cable linked above has been rock solid so far.

Who has found a decent mounting device for your phone?

So with Pixel phones and AA, the only cables I've had consistent success with were the OEM white ones directly from Google. A lot of the Amazon/eBay USB C cables do great for charging, not so much for data transfer.

Yeah, the white one works well, but I don't like the way it rests on the console, lifting the phone. It just seems prone to eventual breakage.

The SUNGUY cable has worked really well so far (advertised itself as supporting Android Auto), and it just tucks away so nicely. No strain on the cable at all.
