I could have sworn I had heard that while the Z is manufactured in Japan once they arrive in California Nissan is operating a small shop where a body panel or two is then added. This was done as a means of getting around the current low tariff. But I could be totally wrong.

it just says final assembly on window sticker because as the ports they add small things for example if you buy a heritage they put the bumper wheels and decals on at the port the car comes from japan with the standard bumper and performance wheels. Zs come in at ports both east and west coast and this process happens at all the ports

they also prep the cars by adding floor mats and under spoilers there so the dealer can install them once put on a truck

%25 is a discount since most new cars increased in price over %30+ from 2020 to 2024. This is obviously a power play to force other countries hands to rethink their tariff policies against the US.
Japan only has a 2.5% tariff on US Cars. They have a 25% tariff on trucks but that matches the 25% the USA has on trucks not made in the USA, Mexico, or Canada (aka The Chicken Tax).

FYI, to those who don't know. If tariffs are imposed on imported cars they're not affected if they were sitting on the lot when the tariffs kick in. Had a salesman try to scare me with that this morning. I corrected him on it and he went with the "my manager told me..."

Correct. The tariffs only apply to vehicles entering the country on or after April 2, 2025.

as this relates to the Z ...not sure if I posted this recently but 2025 production is over it ran from around Nov to finishing up in March. The Z plant is currently not producing Zs until towards the end of the summer. 2025 model year will be much smaller and shorter than the 2024 which lasted about 18 months. This means a majority of Zs are already in US dealer inventory.

Realistically then, 2025 will be the final model year. I really doubt Nissan goes through all the trouble to pay the tariff only to have the vehicles sit on dealers lots and take monetary loses as they will have to be heavily discounted and subsidized by Nissan itself in the form of manufacturers rebates. Also, with the new sound regulations in Japan and Europe this seems like the ideal time to end production once and for all.

At the end of the day, it is working as Trump planned since the beginning. Big corporations will start moving and start production in U.S. So all those US based companies who moved to Mexico and China for cheap labor, will now be moving back to US. It is a win in my book.
Trump could run for a 3rd term, win, serve the four additional years and still be out of office before someone could spin up a brand new auto manufacturing plant in US. Nissan's lead time on a new model vehicle is ~4 years to build it at a plant that already exists. The idea that you can just flip the 25% tariff switch and immediately start producing vehicles in the US is naive. If we really want to bring manufacturing back to the US, an actual long term plan is necessary, with a clearly defined ramp up to penalties and tariffs. Anything else is short sighted political grandstanding.

The real joke is that it's all a moot point anyways. In 10 years 90% of automotive manufacturing jobs in the US will be performed by physical AI using robots from... you guessed it, China.

I agree. However, this is just a start even though tariffs have been around since forever. Porsche is already building a battery factory in the US so it was likely only a matter of time before they expanded to BEV production here or in NA as well. But that was due to high cost electricity in Germany.

These tariffs will put a Z in the price range of a current Porsche and a Porsche in the price range of a Ferrari. And Heaven help you if you are in the market for a 296 GTB.

While President Trump’s 25% tariff is intended to bring back manufacturing it will take years to ramp up and American labor is much more expensive so the American consumer will never win. In the mean time we all lose with less models to choose from and much higher out the door prices. This tariff could literally cause an already vulnerable company like Nissan to legitimately go out of business. Nissan has made its reputation lately on selling cheap cars to lower income and lower credit individuals. 25% on to an Altima or Versa may be check mate. Even if they are manufactured in Smyrna or Canton they are made using foreign parts subject to the tariff. Just bad all around.

The harsh reality is, tariffs or not, you can’t compete with slave labor. We should be focusing on beating China to AI and robotics instead of trying to create manufacturing jobs like it’s 1970.

Most car companies that sell a lot of cars in the US have plants in the US.

It's cars like the Z that are not sold A LOT that are not made in the US.

It is way cheaper to make the cars these companies sell a ton of to the US in the US than ship them across oceans.

That's exactly what they are doing right now. They are investing billions into AI because China is way ahead of us when it comes to technology.

Well if any company will pander to profit off of chaos it is a GM company. They probably lobbied for this mess.
