The one on the left looks like a screw with a clip, and there's a two way arrow next to it as if it adjusts something, but it doesn't move. It doesn't seem to really do anything except go into a hole (the seven black metal screws hold this plastic plate in place). Then on the right is an open hole with a lock icon next to it. I took this apart recently to add a custom cover to the arm rest and couldn't figure out what these are supposed to do?

Those are adjustment screw holes. When screw is in left hole, lid can slide. When in right hole it is locked, won't slide. Described in owners manual Section 2-61. See image.

thanks much! Believe it or not i read through every page of the manual when I brought the car home but then stowed it in that handy cubby behind the passenger seat and promptly forgot about it and didn’t remember seeing this section

Bonus question: does anyone use this feature? I've thought about it, since I rarely need the second cupholder.

I would, but I used both cup holders often. The lid sliding backward inadvertently is a bother.

Wow, glad i learned this today so thanks! The inadvertent sliding drives me nuts and we never really use the second cup holder.

There really should be a secondary latch that releases lid slide and locks lid in position when released.

I should say though, that I'm glad that the second cup holder is at least available. 💪🤓👍

You’re a better Z owner than I.
I usually glance at it, think to myself about how I need to read through it, and end up forgetting about it. ;)

I work in IT so have RTFM drilled into me but doesn’t mean my memory has kept up! Learn by doing 😎🏎🏁

Speaking of cup holders, I just realized I finally have useful ones!!!
Drove a Z33 from ‘03 to ‘25. The overengineered small spindly one that pops out of the dash was a joke. The center console cup holder was good and stable, as long as the car wasn’t moving.
