I think I've seen a discussion about this somewhere in this forum. But I want to make it official because I think that many; if not most, Z owners will face this issue.
My 24 Nismo tailgate rattles a little bit when driving over rough pavement. I took it to the dealer and they made a little adjustment. It worked but just a little bit.
The service guy acknowledged that Nissan is aware of this and is working on an "aftermarket solution". They did adjust the latch... but it doesn't fix the problem.
Two questions for those who may know the answer:

1) Do you know what that adjustment actually is and can we do it ourselves?
2) Does anyone know about this aftermarket item?

Thanks.

Is the noise emanating from the hatch, or "somewhere" behind you while driving?

Look, I'm half deaf, but hear those little annoying rattles. But I can NEVER find them.

Correct. But only when going through rough surface.

When I owned they performance model, I didn't have any rattle. But now I do. I wonder if it has anything to do with being a Nismo and having a different rear spoiler.

If I recall correctly, there are a bunch of little plates and things inside the back part of the bay. I stuck sound deadening over all of them.

My tinnitus is now louder, so I must have cut down on some of the ambient noise emanating from the rear!

Rubber will pop and make a lot of noise when it gets cold and stiff. Silicone lube rubbed on it will help.

I'd rather have rattle than wrench marks on a painted bolt.

I have the same issue on my nismo. It looks like
(To me,) an issue with the hatch not having enough resistance to hold in the locked position. Essentially too much slack. when I hit a bump of any kind, the hatch is able bounce up and down resulting in the locking latch and hatch locking hoop rattling against each other. I am able to push the hatch down a millimeter after I close it. Enough movement to make a light sound, but not enough to be a problem.

When I get home, I'll have to take a video of it.

I am going to 3D scan the trunk space and see if I can build some stand-offs that will help with trunk rigidity while closed.

Great. I have a suspicion that this is a Nismo problem.

For troubleshooting purposes, What if you put a nickel or two inside of the two red circle holes? It would hold the hatch "UP", but would eliminate the bounce rattle.

Yes, it will PROBABLY induce an air leak sound. BUT, it will tell you if the lock hoop (Top, center, not circled)

is too tall.

I've been thinking about something like that.

Out of curiousity, and it could be off-topic, but do you guys have the Nissan door scuff protector? Because I found that on mine, on one side, there's cavity between the protector and my door, and sometimes when I drive over specific surfaces, it rattles too. And it stops once I push the double sided tape against the door again.

I do have the kick plates but they do not rattle, thankfully. I double checked because I do have an occasional buzz from the driver door/dash area, but it is a very different sound to the thunk from the rear.
