Shift Knob Removal - No Damage

The stitching isn't centered..

I was playing around with this today. With the the OEM shifter, the boot actually rotates around the lever to easily align. Does it still for a replacement like this?

I used a inch wide, cm thick, foot long strap wrench with no covering. Took serious muscle but no damage to the knob.
