I installed one on my '17 Mazda CX5 for $250 at that time. Yes. Just white LEDs inside. Battery lasts about 4-5 yrs. Larger button batteries are used inside. Easily replacible. It turns off when door is closed. There is a magnet on the bottom-edge of door to trigger the switch.

The lighted door sill in my Infiniti is wired into the BCM.

Although, with as cheap as manufacturers are getting these days, it wouldn't surprise me that these would be battery operated now. Homelink mirrors are that way now too.
