Hello all,

I have a new 2025 Z Sport Manual and am loving it. It has about 1300 miles. Now, I don't stall out much. But, admittedly, I have a couple of times. The last time I did, I heard this crazy clunking/tapping sound coming from the clutch/transmission/flywheel area. Since it's so new, I'm sure that it's normal but it would drive me crazy if I didn't ask some people who actually knew. I recorded a video, after stalling out on purpose for viewing/listening purposes. Is this normal? I did some research and I couldn't really find anything in regard to this issue. Maybe people are too embarrassed to admit they stall out sometimes! . Let me know what you think? It does do it every time. This morning I jacked the car up and got under it for a few minutes trying to shake things and re-create the noise to no avail... I was making sure there was nothing loose...Thanks for any input

Cheers!

Sounds like exhaust and other stuff flopping around because you’re killing the drivetrain. Just stop and drive the car.

I really appreciate your reply bud. I'm pretty much sure it's not the exhaust (I got under it this morning and really checked around), but perhaps it COULD be. I listened very carefully when I took the video and I'm sure this noise is coming from around or inside the transmission area. However, I do take from your comment that it does sound normal to you. I really appreciate the feedback

Does anyone else have any more input? Has anyone ever heard any sound like this with any Z? I read before that Z's are known for having slack in the drivetrain...does this sound normal to anyone else with experience? :please:

Is anyone daring enough to go and stall their's out for me and see if they hear a sound like this?
😉

Basic troubleshooting is replicating the issue. Part of the issue is that Stalling a car is not part of the normal driving process. If the issue only happens when you stall the car out (on purpose or otherwise) I think that's more of a driver issue than a car issue.

You introduce unnecessary shock into the drive train by stalling it out like that; the noise could be coming from anything that is attempting to work as intended but is unable to because of the abrupt engagement of the clutch without having the necessary torque to overcome the resistance needed to move the car.

What you are seeking an answer for isn't likely so much Z specific as it is any car with a manual transmission specific. If you stall it out, you're going to hear weird noises from the drive train because of the shock involved with it. Without getting under the car and having someone do that you'll be hard pressed to find out what is making the noise, but its likely coming from the improper operation the car is being subjected to.

That's a great answer. I really appreciate it. Exactly what I was looking for. I appreciate your feedback and, what I get from that is, JUST STOP DOING IT!

That's a perfect answer that I would expect from a technician or something. I get it. I just don't really like taking my car to dealership service departments for many personal reasons:rolleyes: (maybe some other enthusiasts might understand) ...Thanks!! :)

If anyone else has any input, or some more specific information/feedback from hearing something like this specifically on a Z like ours, please let me know!

If youre worried just in case you might as well take it to the dealer and ask them. Otherwise, if your car is running fine and shifting good then nothing to worry about.

Not a technician, but its kind of self explanatory that if you are willingly doing something abnormal to your car that results in an abnormal noise, the logical decision would be to not repeat that which causes the problem.

What you're doing doesn't make sense; Its comparable to letting a car run low on oil and getting rod knock, then filling it back up with oil, having the sound go away, then intentionally doing the same thing again while asking other people to try and replicate your situation.

This isn't specific to a Z car, you're stalling the car out and that is causing stress on the drivetrain which is likely the source of the noise you are hearing. It's basic troubleshooting steps, you replicate the conditions upon which the issue in question presents itself, only this isn't an abnormal condition, you are intentionally stalling the car out, of course its going to make an uncomfortable noise. Don't believe me? Try driving with the Ebrake up, or starting off in 3rd gear. Plenty of weird noises to be had if you try that, but don't try that.

Thanks for the comment. I appreciate your explanation.

Not normal. Stalled out a few times with my Z the very first couple hundred miles. Never heard that sound. Not trying to alarm you, just giving my feedback. Maybe my girl stalled hard one time and made that noise, but I am not 100%

Thank you man. Exactly the feedback I was looking for. It doesn't sound normal to me. I understand that you're not supposed to stall but it can happen at times and this sound, when it does, concerns me especially with the vehicle being so new...As much as I hate going to dealer service departments to, most of the time, hear excuses from guys who might not really know what's going on just trying to get you out the door to go on to the next customer, I'll give them a chance. I expect to hear some kind of response like I have been getting earlier in this thread, accompanied by a stupid demeaning look, but MAYBE I'll get someone good and knowledgeable who cares...

Are you stalling hard? I generally stall very lightly, right on the edge. My girl stalled hard AF once and that's the only time I was alarmed, and likely, but don't remember, hearing that noise. I remember I was pissed though lol

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly bud. I might be stalling pretty hard man. They are touching up the PPF right now so I'll try and stall it lightly after they give it back to me in a half hour or so and see if I don't hear the noise.

I hope you know what I mean about dreading the dealership service department. I'm pretty picky about my cars and, not every time, but it seems like after leaving my cars in service departments (sometimes) it comes back with some kind of scratch or ding due to the carelessness of porters and techs...I like to avoid going there as much as possible. Even the free oil changes, I'm like nah...I'll do it myself. I've seen techs putting the wrong oil weight in cars. It can happen more often than people would think...

I feel that. However, I just had to go to the dealership twice to get my infotainment fixed. Should've taken one attempt, but eh. No actual issues, warranty, so free. So that's nice. Let us know. Flutter the clutch on the edge and let it stall and let us know. dont just straight up release it
