From my experience, it’s a black plastic bag he ran over. If you run over a bag, look behind & see if you can still see it. That’s what happened to me on my 370Z Nismo. I couldn’t see the bag anymore- so I at least I knew. Smells terrible & takes months for that plastic burning smell to go away 😂
That’s what it looks like to me as well. I didn’t see it.

Smell started in Oct around 3k miles. At 5k now, and it still smelled daily…

Three things I do instinctively in my car because of past experiences:
1. Hard braking in traffic, I immediately look in my rear view mirror to make sure the person behind me is braking as well.
2. Driving by a business exit to the right of me, if someone's turning out in front of me or across me from my right, I watch them like a hawk to make sure they know I'm there (lost 2 cars because of this).
3. If I can't avoid something or it's fluttering around (plastic bag, limb, etc...) I watch my rear view to make sure it comes out.

Just yesterday a plastic bag was dancing around in front of me and I couldn't avoid it. Strangely took a few seconds to appear, but it did. Getting those tangled in your exhaust is really nasty, especially for those with bright shiny exhaust systems.

Took a look under and found this. Not as bad as yours but definitely in a similar spot I hope this helps anyone else with the same issue.
