This trip required planning for three legs with driver/passenger swaps. The first was from Seattle to Albuquerque, the second was onto Los Angeles, and the third leg up the California, Oregon and Washington coasts. Sorry this is a bit dated, but you know, life. This was my first experience with the GoPro so please bear with me and feel free to send suggestions.
Day one begins with my consigliere, Scott. We left Seattle under heavy rain and mid 50s and headed east on I-90 over Snoqualmie pass where it had been snowing for days. We did drive through some pretty slushy conditions until we got over the pass where we were met by bright blue skies. We had a fleeting glimpse of long horned sheep and saw our best sunset that evening as we got into Boise.
Our next morning we sidle up to a great local breakfast, or brunch. From here we went east to I-15 and headed through Salt Lake City at rush hour. No worries, we were mostly on 6-8 lanes through town, like a giant slot car track. Next up was a long lonely stretch of interstate that saw me get nearly 25 minutes at over 100mph. A guy passed me in a truck and I followed. Our goal that night was someplace around Grand Junction Colorado and got in late. This was our staging area for the Million Dollar Highway from Ouray to Silverton Colorado which was a primary destination for us. Even at 25mph it was a great drive. If we weren’t pressed for time we’d have turned around and gotten two more trips. I highly recommend this drive. The rest of the day was cruising through the high desert to Albuquerque where we again got in late. Total distance 1,620 miles of driving bliss.
The next day my wife and all my siblings flew or drove in Albuquerque to celebrate our dad’s 95th birthday Sorry, yes he’s still driving!
After a great road trip all by itself Scott flew back to Seattle and my wife took over as passenger. We headed to LA with my sister tagging along behind us in her car. We stopped in the quaint town of Williams, Arizona for the night. The next day after a short drive we arrived in LA where we checked into our favorite hotel in east Hollywood. For the next few days we hung out with my brother and his wife for a week of great eating. Adam took me to a different car museum, The Nethercutt, where we saw lots of pre-war cars and includes some odd Hollywood cars; the Tool Time van among them.
Adam is my next driver from LA to Seattle and handles the manual with no issues.
We headed up I-5 to Redding where we headed west on CA-??? which was built for our cars! Of course we did get pulled over by a great CHP officer, he let Adam off with a verbal warning! Once at the coast we headed north on 101 all the way to the Straight of Juan de Fuca. Along the way we stopped at about every scenic view in California and Oregon and Washington we could find.
Once back in Washington and after a day at the beach we headed north on the coast to the Moclips Sutherland highway. A few months prior I got a verbal warning for 20 over in a 50mph zone on this beautiful stretch of highway. Next up was a short stop in the Hoh Rain forest where we saw a small herd of Elk grazing.
