Just curious what setup everyone is running. I noticed most downpipes are 3" and exhaust come in 2.5" and 3" Plan to go FBO in the future. I'm leaning toward AMS race pipes and thinking about HKS Hi Power Exhaust.

Definitely 3" if you have power in mind. I prefer the sound of 3", especially with downpipes as well. The Z is pretty damn quiet otherwise lol. Unless you want that

I personally like the sound of the Nismo catback street exhaust. But I wonder, if I used that exhaust and eventually want to get a stage 1 tune, would that exhaust be a bottleneck? I'm not looking for massive hp gains just at the very least to remove the limiter.

I believe the Nismo is 2.25” which is made by borla and the borla catback is 2.5”

One thing I've noticed is that most exhausts including all JDM ones are 2.5". So if we want a 3" exhaust to pair up with 3" DP we have to look into one of the ones made in USA.

I think Tomei is made overseas IIRC.

If you look at what kind of power can be made through a single 3" you will be surprised. Z1 has 2 exhausts for the Z. The single "Race" which is a single 3" and the Touring which is duel 2.5" to single 3" and then back to duel 2.5". Z1 shows plans on doing the big power packages with this setup. Duel 3" doesn't show gains until over 800 HP. You're not going to loose power with it though and it does change the sound. All personal preference. The further back in the exhaust system you go the less it matters as the exhaust cools. By going large you just loose velocity. If you aren't doing full length 3" downpipes, then it really doesn't matter. The most important part of the exhaust from a "It needs to be bigger" standpoint, is the downpipes because you want room for the heat expansion. If you are doing just lower downpipes and keeping the factory stock primary cats, then it really is un necessary to do the 3" down pipes even. The Tomei Y pipe drops down to a single 2.75" Roughly and people make power. With our stock turbos being so small, they themselves are our largest restriction... Little baby snails lol. All of this being said... I'm still struggling to figure out what exhaust I want...:headbang:

Thanks for the detailed explanation!! ? I really appreciate it. I think I'm going to go for full AMS race downpipes and HKS exhaust. It seems to have good build quality and looks nice. Probably going to get the AMS alpha package and probably run e85 in the future. ?

Sounds like a beast of a plan!! Question.... Do you know where we can get the full downpipes? (we are both in the unfriendly state of Cali)
