Well, pretty much everyone's house has appreciated ridiculously. I'm thinking lot's of people are leaning on a HELOC to fund these stupid purchases.
I doubt anyone is taking out a HELOC to buy a $100k car. Could be wrong but the typical buyer for something like this has lots of FU money. House appreciation doesn’t really help anyone except for those paying PMI haha. Sure you can sell it, but you have to live somewhere. Replacement house will cost more and rents are at an all time high.

That's not how people think.
Many people treat the equity in their homes like a bank. I think it's possible you have a more rational grasp of finances, but not everyone does.

And it's not "FU" money, as people also seem ok with paying over $80k for a pickup truck these days, and if someone wants to do that they gotta get in line.

My experience has been the type of people bidding on cars like this have a collection of cars. 10, 20, 30% home appreciation means nothing to them.

The person you’re referring to is the one with an average job who is trying to keep up with the Joneses. The person bidding over $100k on a +20 year car is the Joneses.

Anyone paying that much for a 27 year old Toyota is a complete fkn idiot. The car is absolutely nothing special at all and is completely over hyped by a trash movie series that used to be considered a joke in the scene, and is for whatever reason cherished now. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.
